Daily Friar 8.22.12

Daily Friar Banner Rennick

Is Chase Headley awesome or what? After Dale Thayer gave up the game tying home run in the 9th inning, Chase Headley took all that bad taste out of everyone’s mouth with a walkoff blast. Count Full Count did it in fitting fashion too as he took the count to 3-2 before smacking the ball deep to right field to win the game. Safe to say that that ball would have won it in any ballpark. In fact if we were playing in Pittsburgh it probably could have reached the river…maybe. It was a fun but frustrating game to watch though. So many missed opportunities with runners on base. In fact Chase was up earlier in the game with no one out and the bases loaded, but struck out looking on a curve ball on the outside corner. But he got his redemption and the Padres come out on top. Here are your Padres links for today:

Padres sink Bucs in extras on Headley’s homer –
“But his last swing not only made up for what rated as one of just a few subpar nights for the Padres third baseman this season, but it proved to be the game-winner, as his two-run home run gave San Diego a 7-5 victory over the Pirates in 10 innings before a crowd of 21,882.”

Brach is a success in new role with Padres – Union Tribune
“He has entered 20 games this season in the middle of an inning with at least one runner on base. Brach has inherited a total of 34 runners. Only two of those runners have scored.”

Andrew Werner getting called up for today’s start – NCT
“Left-hander Andrew Werner —- a 25-year-old, non-drafted free agent out of the University of Indianapolis who spent all of spring training at the minor league facility in Peoria, Ariz. —- just never thought it’d be him getting the call.”

Trio has gone from ice cold to scalding hot – CBS Sports
“Among them, Maybin, Venable and Cabrera are a combined 27-for-42 (.643) with 10 runs scored and nine RBI over three straight Padres wins.”

Lake Elsinore and the Padres extend PDC – Ballpark Digest
“More affiliation news: the San Diego Padres and Lake Elsinore Storm (High Class A; Cal League) have extended their player-development contract (PDC) through the 2014 season.”

Talks of the Apocalypse were premature – Avenging Jack Murphy
“Hope: That as Anthony Rizzo cools and Yonder Alonzo grows, talks of an apocalypse will subside for a time.

Daily Farm Round-Up: 8-21-12 – Alex Bartlett of The Friarhood
“Jedd Gyorko homers for the 3rd night in a row as the Tucson pitching staff, led by Andrew Cashner and Kip Wells, blanket the Grizzlies. Reymond Fuentes has one his best nights this year, but a rough inning by Casey Kelly ultimately dooms the Missions to their 7th straight loss. Austin Hedges collects multiple hits for the 3rd night in a row, but the TinCaps lose 6-3.”
