Daily Friar 8.27.12

Daily Friar Banner Rennick

Seven wins in a row! The Padres are the best team in baseball right now. I don’t care about records at this point, I look at the winning streak and how well they have played in August. So far in August they are 15-9 and 7-3 over their last 10 games. Also they are now 11 games from being back at .500 and only 12.5 games behind the Giants. September has a lot of games against the division too. I’m not saying that the Padres will wind up in the playoffs, but crazier things have happened (remember the Rockies?). It will be fun to watch this team as we close out the season. Here are your Padres links for today:

Casey Kelly ties Padres record as 15th starting pitcher employed – Union Tribune

Tom Krasovic looks at the trade up north and what it means for the Padres
“The Dodgers spending like the Yankees is good news for new Padres ownership and executives. Our rich guys can portray themselves as gritty smart underdogs compared to the big-spending Dodgers, especially if the Dodgers over-reached by taking on $250 million in guaranteed salary to three players who are all past the typical peak years.”

September call-up candidates from around the league – MadFriars
Some of the indications from the Padres have led many to believe a Gyorko call-up may be a long shot, but few players in the minor leagues are as deserving.

Some notes from CBS Sports; Gregerson has a long scoreless streak going
“RHP Luke Gregerson allowed one hit with two strikeouts over 1 1/3 innings Sunday to pick up his first save of the season. Gregerson has gone 22 straight innings over 22 appearances without allowing a run.”

Dale Thayer to return Monday – NBC Sports
“Thayer was excused from the club on Friday for the birth of his third child and spent the entire weekend away.”

Clayton Richard enjoying solid August – Chicken Friars
“Over his five starts, Richard has posted an impressive 4-1 record, and dropped his ERA down to 3.72 (2.11 for August).”

Gaslamp Ball previews the Padres vs. Braves
“I like the Padres for two out of three. I’m leaning toward the Padres extending their winning streak to nine before dropping the finale, but Stults really has been good.”

Series finale means series recap from Jeremy Nash
“The Padres extended their win streak to seven games, sweeping Arizona on the road after sweeping the Pirates at home. The win on Sunday raised their record to 15-9 in August clinching their second straight winning month with four games to go.”

Casey Kelly debut preview – Richard Dorsha of The Friarhood
