Daily Friar 8.28.12

Daily Friar Banner Rennick

Winning streaks are fun aren’t they? Everything is clicking for the Padres and everybody is having fun while doing it. The last loss came against the Giants, who the Padres then beat the next day to finish the series. So from the Giants series, to the Pirates, then the DBacks, and now the Braves. What surprised me about last night’s win was, well, a couple things actually. First, we beat the Braves. This team is pretty damn good this season and we haven’t played well against them to begin with. Second, we shut them out! Third, Casey Kelly was awesome in his major league debut! Okay, maybe that last part isn’t that surprising, but it was still great to see. Andrew Werner goes out there today to try for his second major league win in as many starts. Let’s push this to 9! Here are your Padres links for today:

Kelly’s blue book value soars after MLB debut –
“Casey Kelly was everything the Padres and their fans could have hoped for out of their top-rated prospect in a standout Major League debut that propelled San Diego to its eighth straight victory in a 3-0 win over the Braves on Monday night.”

Hundley eager to learn from ugly 2012 season – NCT
“Nick Hundley’s season is officially over. The chance to hit the reset button next spring on a disastrous 2012 season isn’t exactly a consolation prize, either, as he prepares for surgery to repair meniscus tears in his right knee.”

CBS Sports has a preview for the game tonight
“After an outstanding first outing by Kelly, San Diego will turn to Andrew Werner (1-0, 3.00), who was also solid in his major league debut.”

Joe Thatcher throws simulated game – NBC Sports
“He’ll be ready for a short rehab assignment soon. Thatcher is expected to eventually need surgery on his right knee but is hoping to delay it until the offseason.”

Prospect Profile: Matthew Wisler – Seedlings to Stars
“Despite being one of the youngest pitchers in his league, he has been able to dominate the older competition and post a 2.45 ERA (2.25 FIP) and 1.02 WHIP over 110 innings along with spectacular peripheral numbers including a 108:28 K/BB.”

Brian McCann is the Padres killer – Chicken Friars
“In 20 games at the downtown San Diego ballpark, McCann owns a .358 average with four home runs and 21 RBI.”

San Diego Padres are the New Collosus – Gaslamp Ball
“The San Diego Padres are the true California Team. Those other teams? They came from ancient lands with storied pomp just like The New Colossus says (Let’s all just ignore the Angels for the purposes of this exercise).”

Mylo Erickson has a recap of week 21 for the Tuscon Padres
“The Tucson Padres had a good week for one of its final weeks of the season. In week #21 the T-Pads won four of the seven games they played.”
