Daily Friar 9.7.13

Let’s just skip to the ninth inning of last night’s game, shall we? In case you missed it, the Padres had a flare for the dramatic. Huston Street was called upon in a non save situation to keep the game tied at 2-2, but his former teammate Todd Helton disrupted things with a solo shot to center field to lead-off the inning. For what it’s worth, Street is 27-for-28 in save situations this season. The Padres weren’t down for long though. Chase Headley led off the bottom of the ninth with a solo home run of his own to left field that landed in the third deck of the Western Metal Supply Building. That was Headley’s second home run in as many games. Later in the ninth, after an intentional walk, the bases were loaded with only one out for pinch-hitter Jesus Guzman. On the one-one pitch, Guzman hit a grounder down the third base line, just out of the reach of the Colorado third baseman, and just like that…the Padres win in walkoff fashion! Now, for today’s match-up at 5:40 PT, the Padres send Tyson Ross to the mound to face Tyler Chatwood of the Rockies. And if that’s not enough to entice you to attend tonight’s game, it’s also Padres Luchador Mask night. That’s right, the first 25,000 fans will receive luchador masks. So be sure to get to the ballpark early.

Padres starter Chris Young retired the first 23 Brewers he faced before Gabe Kapler homered in the 8th inning to rob him of a perfect game. The Padres still pulled out the win however, 10-1. #StealthFB – Baseball Reference
