The T-Pads’ offense was relentless as they scored in 5 different innings and ended up scoring just enough to win. Jeudy Valdez’s perfect night at the plate coupled with Keyvius Sampson’s solid start drove San Antonio to victory. Max Fried pitched well for Fort Wayne, yet two home runs off of him were all Silver Hawks needed to put away the TinCaps 4-2. Lake Elsinore had the day off.

Hitting Prospect of the Day: Jeudy Valdez

Pitching Player of the Day: Keyvius Sampson

Tucson Padres 7, Omaha Storm Chasers 5

Dan Robertson-CF: 1-4, 2b, BB, K

Gregorio Petit-SS: 2-5, 2b, RBI, K, Run scored

Yasmani Grandal-DH: 1-5, 2b, 2K, Run scored

Rene Rivera-C: 2-4, 2b, 2RBI, BB, Run scored

Jonathan Galvez-2B: 2-5, 2b, 3b, 3K, 2 Runs scored

Cody Decker-1B: 2-4, 2 2b, 2RBI, BB, K, Run scored

Robbie Erlin-SP: 4.2 IP, 5H, 5ER, 2BB, 5K, HR Allowed

Notes: Tucson had a great night offensively a every start collected at least 1 hit and the lineup collected 14 hits overall. 6 different players recorded at least 1 extra base hit and 5 different players drove in runs. Robbie Erlin suffered his second underwhelming start in a row as he failed to go 5 innings and allowed 5 runs. Tucson continues to play good baseball as their record stands at 25-21.

San Antonio Missions 4, Arkansas Travelers 2

Reymond Fuentes-RF: 1-4, RBI, K

Rico Noel-CF: 3-4, 2b, RBI

Everett Williams-LF: 1-4, K

Jake Blackwood-3B: 1-3

Eddy Rodriguez-C: 1-3, K

Jeudy Valdez-SS: 3-3, 2b, 3b, 2 Runs scored

Keyvius Sampson-SP: 5.0 IP, 3H, 2ER, 2BB, 5K (W, 2-3)

Kevin Quackenbush-RP: 1.0 IP, 0H, 0R, 2K (S, 7)

Notes: Since being demoted to San Antonio, Keyvius Sampson has done well; Sampson has allowed no more than 3 runs in each of his 5 starts and has gone at least 4 innings in every start. He owns a 3.80 ERA in San Antonio (8.03 ERA over 4 starts with Tucson). Reymond Fuentes has hit safely in 9 of his last 10 games although he has collected just one hit in 7 of those 9 games. He is hitting .320 on the year. Jeudy Valdez had a perfect 3-3 night and came a home run short of the cycle. Previously, he had been riding a 3 game hitless streak and has been slumping for most of the year; he’s hitting just .233 over 162 AB’s.

Lake Elsinore Storm: DNP

Fort Wayne TinCaps 2, South Bend Silver Hawks 4

Mallex Smith-DH: 0-4, Run scored

Maxx Tissenbaum-2B: 2-4, HR(1), 2RBI, BB, Run scored

Jeremy Baltz-LF: 1-5

Dane Phillips-C: 0-5, K

Alberth Martinez-RF: 0-4, 4K

Max Fried-SP: 6.0 IP, 6H, 4ER, 2BB, 5K, 2 HR Allowed (L, 2-1)

Notes: Fried received his first loss of the season, although it was just 2 pitches that did him in. He allowed two 2-run home runs. Regardless, he has still thrown very well this year; he has a 2.95 ERA over 36.2 innings with 39 strikeouts and just 27 hits over that span. Maxx Tissenbaum provided all of the offense tonight with his home run, his first of the year.

After winning the first game against the Cardinals following a split of a four game series hosting Washington, our Padres looked primed to have a winning home stand. But they fell behind by too much each of the next two games resulting in losing the series.

But all was not lost as there were many positives from Yonder Alonso’s continued improvement on defense to Kyle Blanks and Alexi Amarista’s contributions off the bench. But here are the five things that stood out for me this series.

5. Jason Marquis

The 34 year-old veteran has separated himself from the pack as the Padres most reliable starter this year with yet another quality start on Monday. He’s won five straight starts, this time allowing only two runs, one earned, on three hits in six innings. He did walk four but punched out three to bring his record to 6-2.

4. Huston Street

Yes Huston made the list by pitching a perfect ninth. Yes he retired the Cardinals batters in order on inducing a two fly outs and a grounder to get his 11th save and lower his ERA to 4.19. But he got a lot of help from our next guy.

3. Chris Denorfia

Nobody’s star shined brighter than the Norf’s on Monday night, leading the Friars to a big win. Batting seventh in the order, he had three singles in four at-bats including a clutch two-out grounder into centerfield to tie the game in the sixth. He also stole a base of Yadier Molina (no easy feat) and executed one of his patent-pending “Denorfia Dives” in left field to on a dying line drive to get the first out in the ninth and help Street stay out of trouble and earn the save.

2. Jedd Gyorko

The Padres rookie second baseman really stood out in the later two games of the series and continues to show the pop the organization has spoke so highly of for the last couple seasons. Though he didn’t get a hit in game one, he did draw a walk that enabled Denorfia to tie the game and then came around as the go-ahead run on when Jesus Guzman took one for the team with the bases loaded. He followed that with a three hit game on Tuesday and got the Padres on the board Wednesday with his fifth home run of the season (all in May). He also singled and later scored in the ninth that started a small rally which brought the tying run to the plate before they ultimately lost, 4-2.

1. Tim Stauffer

Stauffer made his third appearance of the season taking over for Burch Smith, who could not get an out in the first for the second time in just three major league starts. Stauffer did not disappoint, surrendering only one run in five and two thirds innings on a two-out single by Molina in the fifth. Tim may have allowed eight hits but struck out seven Cardinals while issuing no free passes. It’s great to see the oft-injured Stauffer succeed again after struggling to stay in the Majors after the Friars selected him fourth overall in the 2004 draft.

So those are the five things that stood out for me. It would have been nice to take the series but the Pads fell victim to ineffective starting pitching again, digging them too big of holes from which to climb. But overall the team has played extremely well in all facets of the game and has a great chance to come out victorious in Arizona this weekend before flying to Seattle Sunday night to start this season’s Vedder Cup.

Tyler Lyons was making his first major league start last night against Burch Smith who was making his third. At the end of the game one would come out victorious and look like he had been pitching for years, while the other has earned himself a trip back to the minor leagues. It seemed like it would be an easy win for the Padres having to face a rookie pitcher, especially since the offense has been doing pretty good of late. However, that was not to be the case as Tyler Lyons shut down the offense to the tune of four hits through seven innings. The only run came on a mammoth home run by Jedd Gyorko in the seventh inning. The Padres would later plate two more in the bottom of the ninth only teasing a comeback before ultimately dropping the game 5-3. Burch Smith lasted one inning once again, giving up four runs on five hits before being pulled in the second. Tim stauffer came in to relieve him and lasted 5.2 innings and was phenomenal. If we didn’t have that first inning we may have won that game. So as I said, and as the articles will show below, Burch Smith was sent down. He was called up from AA and sent down to AAA so there is that going for him. He has good stuff, but he worked too much around the plate and wasn’t fooling anyone. We’ll see him again soon and I know he will be better.

Which Color Would you Add to the Padres Uniforms?

Much has been made about the Padres colors and how boring they are. As we celebrate the 15 year anniversary of the 1998 team that won the National League Pennant here on Friarhood, it made me think… What if the Padres added a third color?

I know that the Brown crew is already screaming, but for a minute please put away your pitch forks and torches. Most people do like the brown and gold, especially in moderation, but it’s not going to happen. You (lover of brown and gold) have proven that you will still buy brown and gold when the team wears blue and grey, so for the Padres it’s a win-win. For the purpose this exercise let’s take the old school brown and gold color scheme out of the equation. After all, we are just adding one color.

I know that some really like the brown for the uniqueness of it. In theory that’s great, but in reality the color needs to have mass appeal. The Padres aren’t trying to be a rebellious teen, they are trying to sell merchandise (and ideally establish an identity). In an effort to meet in the middle, I believe adding a third color could add some zip to the uniform as well as break away from the blue/grey format that people feel is boring.

Color schemes are to the right, vote on the pool and leave you comments, after all, this is an open discussion.

The young right-hander was called up from Double-A San Antonio on May 11th and made his Major League debut against Tampa Bay that same day. During his tenure with the club, Smith surrendered 15 runs over 7.1 innings pitched in three starts, accumulating an 18.41 ERA.

Smith did have his moments during his three starts, collecting 11 strikeouts, but also at the same time giving up 4 homeruns and walking 6. Wednesday night’s start marked the second time during Smith’s short stint in the Majors where he could not record an out in the second inning of a game. Recently called up pitcher Tim Stauffer pitched in relief of Smith, going for 5.2 innings – the most by a Padres reliever in 5 years.

The club neglected to announce who would be filling in for Smith in the meantime, noting that an official announcement would come Friday when the club starts a short 5-game road trip in Phoenix. Thursday presents an off-day for the Padres before they hit a stretch of 20 consecutive games, their longest of the season.

It has been a while since the Padres have had to endure a beating like that. In fact the 10-2 loss is only outmatched by the 11-2 loss way back on Opening Day against the Mets. I knew going into last night’s game that it wasn’t going to be easy especially facing Adam Wainwright, but I didn’t expect the game to implode like it did. Edinson Volquez had a typical Edinson Volquez outing where the he completely fell off the rails in the fifth inning. Then Anthony Bass came in and seemed to be doing okay until an intentional walk loaded the bases leading to a grand slam. The lineup struggled except for a few bright spots, one being Jedd Gyorko who had three hits. The only problem was he had nobody on base to drive in. The top third of the lineup (Cabrera, Venable, and Headley) went 0-9 with two strikeouts and two walks. Yonder Alonso was batting fourth last night and he only went 1-4. I know the offense has been clicking of late and we are going to have off nights, but they need to do a better job than this if they are going to win consistently. Burch Smith goes at it again tonight to try to win the series. It would be great for him to get a win and it would be great for the club to take a series against such a hot team.

Both affiliates who played tonight, Tucson and Lake Elsinore, participated in extra inning matchups. Unfortunately for the Storm, their struggles continued as they lost a 17 inning game. The Storm pulled ahead in the 13th and 16th innings, but their bullpen was unable to shut the door. On the other hand, Tucson managed to win their extra inning contest due to a great start from Clayton Richard and 3 scoreless innings from the bullpen.

Hitting Prospect of the Day: Jace Peterson

Pitching Player of the Day: Clayton Richard

Tucson Padres 5, Omaha Storm Chasers 2

Dean Anna-2B: 0-4, BB, 2 Runs scored

Dan Robertson-RF: 1-3, BB, K, 2 Runs scored

Yasmani Grandal-C: 1-5, RBI, 2K

Brandon Allen-1B: 0-4, 2RBI, 2K

Gregorio Petit-SS: 1-3, RBI, 2BB

Jonathan Galvez-3B: 1-4, BB, K

Clayton Richard-SP: 6.0 IP, 6H, 2ER, 0BB, 4K

Brad Brach-RP: 1.1 IP, 0H, 0R, K (W, 1-0)

Notes: Tucson managed to beat the Storm Chasers 5-2 in 10 innings. Oddly enough, the T-Pads managed to score 3 runs in the 10th and take the lead without recording a single hit. Two pitchers who have pitched with the big league club already this year, Clayton Richard and Brad Brach, made appearances with Tucson. Richard, who was making his second rehab start, threw his second straight quality start. Richard has a 2.25 ERA and 12 K’s in 12 innings with no walks for the T-Pads. Brach made his first appearance with Tucson after being sent down; he did well as he threw 1.1 no-hit innings and recorded the victory.

San Antonio Missions: DNP

Lake Elsinore Storm 11, Stockton Ports 9

Cory Spangenberg-2B: 2-8, 3b, RBI, BB, K

Yeison Asencio-RF: 2-9, 2 Runs scored

Robert Kral-C: 1-7, HR(9), 2RBI, 2BB, K, 2 Runs scored

Luis Domoromo-LF: 0-6, 2BB, 3K

Jace Peterson-SS: 4-8, 2b, BB, Run scored

Duanel Jones-3B: 2-5, K, Run scored

Travis Whitmore-1B: 3-7, 2b, RBI, BB, K, 2 Runs scored

Travis Jankowski-CF: 2-8, RBI, 4K

Trevor Holder-SP: 4.0 IP, 9H, 4ER, 2BB, 3K

Notes: Good teams find ways to win and bad teams find ways to lose. This was the case in the marathon 17 inning game for the Storm tonight. Despite driving in go ahead RBI’s in the 13th and the 16th innings, Lake Elsinore was unable to close the game out as relievers Matt Lollis and Matt Branham allowed the Ports to comeback and tie and John Hussey allowed the Ports to win via walk off home run. The loss moves Lake Elsinore’s record to a pitiful 13-31 on the season.

Fort Wayne TinCaps: DNP

A few things of note, the Dodgers and Rangers both had two selections in this top 10. The Padres current outfielder Carlos Quentin was selected 19th in this re-draft.

Personally I would have selected San Diego native Adam Jones over Markakis, but that’s just me.

There has been one word floating around lately about the Padres to describe their play recently: scrappy. This team has been scrappy for the better part of a month now as they have been finding ways to win games and holding on to leads against good teams. All offseason we were waiting for that big move to improve the team but the upper managment said that the team was good where they were at, which left a lot of us skeptical. Enter this year and they start 2-10 and we were all questioning the front office even more. However, enter the Dodgers series and things slowly start to look forward. I say slowly because it has been a slow process with some minor setbacks here and there. The nice thing is when the Padres have lost recently it was only for a couple games then they went right back to winning. After getting swept in Tampa they went to Baltimore to sweep, then came home against a tough Nationals team and lost two, only to take the next two to split the series. Now enter the best team in the National League and the Padres were able to take game one from them. This is the third win in a row, third win in the past five games, and now they are only two games below .500 and 4.5 games out of first place. It is a slow process, but it is most definitely progress. Today Edinson Volquez takes the mound (I know I cringed too) against Adam Wainwright (I cringed again). Full previews and recaps from last night are below:
He his hitting .335 over 155 AB’s on the year.
