Both Fort Wayne and Tucson won by 1 run, but in very different fashions. Fort Wayne won off the strength of a strong pitching performance by starter Zach Eflin while Tucson relied on its relentless lineup to provide them with a victory. Lake Elsinore lost their 5th in a row despite a strong performance from Cory Spangenberg and San Antonio was blown out in Matt Wisler’s second Missions start.

Hitting Prospect of the Day: Cory Spangenberg

Pitching Prospect of the Day: Zach Eflin

Tucson Padres 9, Iowa Cubs 8

Dean Anna-2B: 4-5, RBI, K, 3 Runs scored

Dan Robertson-RF: 3-5, 2b, RBI, K, 3 Runs scored

Gregorio Petit-SS: 2-5, 3RBI

Jonathan Galvez-LF: 3-5, K, Run scored

Rene Rivera-C: 2-4, 2b, RBI, Run scored

Jaff Decker-CF: 0-3, 2K

Robbie Erlin-SP: 4.2 IP, 12H, 6R, 4ER, 0BB, 4K, HR Allowed

Notes: After losing by 1 run last night, the T-Pads return the favor after narrowly winning a shootout against the Iowa Cubs. Jonathan Galvez collected his 3rd 3-hit game over the past 5 days as he raised his average over .300. Rene Rivera has been ridiculously hot, he’s putting up videogame numbers; Rivera has hit safely in 9 of his last 10 games. All 9 of those games are multi-hit games; his average is an astounding .611 (not a typo) over that span (22-36). His ridiculous hitting success recently has boosted his average to .414 on the year over 99 AB’s.

San Antonio Missions 1, Frisco RoughRiders 12

Reymond Fuentes-RF: 0-3, 2K

Rico Noel-CF: 0-4, K

Everett Williams-LF: 2-2, 2BB

Kalian Sams-DH: 0-4, 2K

Jake Blackwood-3B: 1-4

Eddy Rodriguez-C: 1-3, HR(2), RBI, K, Run scored

Matt Wisler-SP: 4.0 IP, 6H, 5ER, 2BB, 5K, 2 HR Allowed (L, 1-1)

Notes: Aside from Everett Williams getting on base all 4 times he was at the plate and Eddy Rodriguez’s home run, there was nothing positive about the Missions’ performance tonight. Matt Wisler was not sharp at all in his second Texas League start, every reliever gave up at least 1 earned run, and the offense as a whole only collected 6 hits. The blowout loss moves the Missions’ record down to 21-20.

Lake Elsinore Storm 8, Modesto Nuts 12

Cory Spangenberg-2B: 2-3, 3b, 2RBI, 2BB, 2 Runs scored

Jace Peterson-SS: 0-3, 2RBI, 2BB

Robert Kral-DH: 1-3, RBI, BB

Kyle Gaedele-LF: 2-5, RBI, 2K

Luis Domoromo-LF: 2-5, 3K, Run scored

Travis Jankowski-CF: 1-2, 2b, RBI, BB, 2 Runs scored

Matt Jackson-SP: 5.0 IP, 7H, 6ER, BB, 4K

Matt Lollis-RP: 1.2 IP, 3H, ER, BB, 2K

Notes: Cory Spangenberg stays hot at the plate as he drove in 2 more runs to raise his RBI total to 21 which ranks 3rd among California League 2nd basemen. Spangenberg’s .306 average gives him he 8th highest average in the California league. Matt Lollis gave up a rare earned run today; in 24.2 innings Lollis has allowed to just 4 earned runs, good for a 1.46 ERA.

Fort Wayne TinCaps 4, Lake County Captains 3

Mallex Smith-CF: 2-4, BB, K, Run scored

Maxx Tissenbaum-2B: 0-4, BB

Gabriel Quintana-3B: 1-4, 2b, K

Luis Tejada-1B: 1-4, 2b, Run scored

Jeremy Baltz-DH: 0-5, RBI, 2K

Dane Phillips-C: 1-2, 2BB, Run scored

Zach Eflin-SP: 5.0 IP, 5H, 2ER, 2BB, 6K

Notes: Eflin turned in his 4th consecutive start in which he has thrown at least 5 innings while allowing 2 earned runs or less. With his solid start tonight, Eflin lowered his ERA to 4.73 over 32.1 innings. Dane Phillips continues to hit well; he reached base 3 times tonight while raising his average to .303.

Right-Handed Pitcher Tim Stauffer will be returning to the big leagues, as the Padres own Corey Brock announced that the club had purchased his contract Friday afternoon. Stauffer’s promotion came on the heels of an announcement noting that outfielder Carlos Quentin was away on paternity leave for the birth of his son, Clark. Stauffer is not a fresh face to the organization, as he was on the Padres pitching staff between 2005 and 2012, sporting a 23-31 record and a 3.94 ERA in 96 games.

Stauffer was sent down to Triple-A Tucson in 2012 after stumbling out of the gates with a 5.40 ERA. Tim will be returning to the club, however, after the front office decided that his pitching efforts in Tucson were worth noting with a 2-2 record and 3.16 ERA in eight starts. What role Stauffer will play on the pitching staff has yet to be determined, but he could possibly return to the starting role soon.

In order to make room for Stauffer on the 40-man roster, the Padres made a corresponding move in designating RHP Thad Weber for assignment. Weber had appeared in 3 games for the big league club this season, giving up 2 runs over 9 innings pitched in relief. With the AAA club, Weber had a 4-1 record with a 3.93 ERA in six starts this season.

The Nationals are in town for a four game set right now. This is tough to swallow for the Padres as the Nationals are one of the best young teams in all of baseball at the moment and a lot of people are predicting that they are going to go very far in the playoffs this year. When you have strong offensive talent in Bryce Harper, Ryan Zimmerman, Adam LaRoche and company you know that runs are going to be put on the board. Mix that in with some outstanding pitching and you have yourself a great ball club. Edinson Volquez got the start foe the Padres last night, and as with every start you have to wonder if you’re going to get Bad Volquez or Good Volquez. The last handful of starts we got Good Volquez, last night we got a mix of both for the most part. He walked a lot (four) but he also struck out quite a few (seven). The problem was that he also gave up five runs and his ERA is sitting at 5.55 now. On the other side Stephen Strasburg pitched for the first time at Petco and was spot on. He left after 8 innings of work only allowing one earned run on three hits and striking out five. So the ball was being put in play and runners were getting on via the walk, but the Padres went 0-7 with RISP. This of course is going to have to change if they want any chance of playing consistently good baseball.

Despite a brilliant start by Justin Hancock and an impressive offensive performance, the TinCaps found a way to lose as their bullpen imploded and lost the lead. Lake Elsinore can’t catch a break as they lose again and their record plummets to 12-27. The Missions were the only team in the Padres organization tonight that managed to win a game. Kalian Sams continues to just flat out hit as his offensive output made a difference in the game. The T-Pads were held to just 4 hits as Cubs starter Matt Garza shut the T-Pads down. Regardless of the lack of offense, Clayton Richard pitched well.

Hitting Prospect of the Day: Kalian Sams

Pitching Prospect of the Day: Justin Hancock

Tucson Padres 0, Iowa Cubs 1

Dean Anna-2B: 0-3, 3K

Dan Robertson-RF: 0-4

Jonathan Galvez-LF: 0-4, 4K

Brandon Allen-1B: 2-4

Rene Rivera-C: 2-3

Jaff Decker-CF: 0-3, K

Clayton Richard-SP: 6.0 IP, 4H, ER, 0BB, 8K (L, 0-1)

Notes: Despite turning in a great start, Clayton Richard receives the loss as the T-Pads were shut down my Matt Garza and the Iowa Cubs. Richard looked particularly sharp; he threw a quality start, allowed just 4 hits and held the opposing offense to just a run all while striking out 8. Garza and the Cubs did not allow the T-Pads any extra-base hits; Tucson only had 4 hits by the end of the game.

San Antonio Missions 6, Corpus Christi Hooks 2

Reymond Fuentes-CF: 1-4, BB, K, 2 Runs scored

Rico Noel-RF: 1-2, RBI, BB, K, Run scored

Everett Williams-LF: 0-4, RBI, BB, 3K

Kalian Sams-DH: 2-2, 2b, HR(6), 3RBI, 2BB, Run scored

Jake Blackwood-3B: 0-4, 2K

Jeudy Valdez-SS: 0-4, K

Eddy Rodriguez-C: 0-4

Keyvius Sampson-SP: 5.2 IP, 6H, ER, 2BB, 3K (W, 1-3)

Matt Stites-RP: 1.0 IP, 2H, ER, 2K, HR Allowed

Kevin Quackenbush-RP: 1.0 IP, 0H, 0R, K

Notes: Keyvius Sampson finally records his first win in 2013 after enjoying a successful start against the Hooks. Prior to this start, Sampson had not yet thrown for 5 complete innings with the Missions. Kalian Sams continues to put up video game numbers as he just smacked his 6th home run and drove in runs 13, 14, and 15 over a span of just 9 games. Since he joined the Missions, Sams is hitting .357 (10 hits in 28 AB’s). 9 of those 10 hits have gone for extra bases.

Lake Elsinore Storm 5, Modesto Nuts 6

Cory Spangenberg-2B: 1-4, HR(4), RBI, BB, Run scored

Yeison Asencio-RF: 0-4, 2RBI, K

Robert Kral-C: 0-3, BB, 2K

Lee Orr-1B: 0-3, BB, K

Luis Domoromo-LF: 0-4

Jace Peterson-DH: 1-3, BB, 2 Runs scored

Travis Jankowski-CF: 2-4, RBI, Run scored

Trevor Holder-SP: 4.2 IP, 8H, 6R, 3ER, BB, 3K (L, 0-1)

Notes: Cory Spangenberg has found his power stroke this year; with tonight’s home run, Spangenberg set a career high in single season home runs with 4 (he previously had 4 over his 2 year minor league career). After going through a slump, Travis Jankowski has hit safely in 9 of his last 10 games; he is hitting .353 over that stretch, and has raised his average to .272.

Fort Wayne TinCaps 6, Bowling Green Hot Rods 7

Mallex Smith-DH: 1-4

Alberth Martinez-CF: 2-5, 3K, Run scored

Maxx Tissenbaum-2B: 1-5

Gabriel Quintana-3B: 1-5, K, 2 Runs scored

Jeremy Baltz-LF: 1-4, RBI, K, Run scored

Rodney Daal-C: 1-4, 3b, 2RBI, 2K

Justin Hancock-SP: 6.0 IP, 3H, 0R, 0BB, 3K

Notes: In 7 starts this year, Justin Hancock has allowed more than 1 earned run in just one of his starts. Over 40 innings, Hancock has allowed just 6 earned runs (1.35 ERA on the year). Following tonight’s start, Hancock has thrown 4 quality starts in a row and over his last 2 starts, Hancock has thrown 13 scoreless innings. Every member of the TinCap lineup recorded at least 1 hit tonight, however, the bullpen was shelled which ultimately led to Fort Wayne’s demise.

What’s the best way for the Padres to answer back from a painful sweep handed to them by the struggling Rays in dreary Tropicana Field? It’s to sweep the AL Wild Card leading Orioles in beautiful Camden Yards, of course. And our boys did just that with a great come from behind win on Tuesday night followed by an offensive outburst on Wednesday afternoon to take the short series.

Even in a short series, two wins made it easy to find five positives for our Friars. So here goes.

5. Andrew Cashner

The Padres fire-balling right-hander seems to get better with each start. Cashner lasted into the eighth inning allowing only five hits and an earned run on a third inning homer. He struck out only three but walked just one Oriole batter. He did however give up an unearned run in the eighth that put the Padres down 2-1. But he ended up with a no-decision because of the….

4. Padres’ ninth inning rally

The Padres continued their two-out magic on Tuesday. Entering the game they had scored 30 of their 50 runs in 2013 with two outs. They added two more in game one with yet another improbable come from behind win.

The Padres started the inning off with a pair of first pitch singles by Yonder Alonso and Mark Kotsay off of Orioles’ closer Jim Johnson. Jed Gyorko then grounded into a tailor made 6-4-3 double play, all but ending the inning while allowing Alonso to advance to third. It was up to Chris Denorfia to come up with another clutch hit, which he did with a hard groundball up the middle to tie the game.

Nick Hundley then was hit by a pitch, moving the Norf into scoring position and brining up Everth Cabrera. Cabrera then singled up the middle to give the Padres a 3-2 lead they would ultimately hang on to.

3. Jedd Gyorko

The Padres rookie second bagger had a big day on Wednesday, logging three hits to bring his rookie leading total to 36. He also scored two of the Friars eight runs.

2. Everth Cabrera

What could Everth do to top his game winning RBI the night before? How about a 4-5 day at the plate? He also drew a walk, stole a base, scored a run and drove one in, raising his on-base percentage to .341.

1. The Little Ninja that could.

Alexi Amarista was the biggest bat in the Padres big victory on Wednesday, going 3-5 with two doubles and a two-run bomb. He scored every time he reached base for the Friars, forcing Bud Black to find ways to get him into the lineup.

So there are five great things from another great series. The Padres will begin another home stand starting with a four game series with the Nationals beginning Thursday. I got them at least splitting the series against one of the top teams in the National League. But I promise you, members of the congregation, that we will have no problem finding five good things in the upcoming four games.

Go Padres!

In yesterday’s post I asked for a no drama game. That is exactly what the Padres gave to us as they put up an early lead and never looked back as they beat the Orioles 8-4 to complete the two game sweep. Huston Street pitched again in the bottom of the ninth and that final out seemed to elude him as well. I don’t know what it is, but the first two outs are easy to get and that final one always takes some work. Anyways, the Padres came away with that win in the end. Imagine though if the Padres had swept the Rays as well they would be sitting on a nine game winning streak and would have a 21-18 record. This would be good for third place in the standings as they are now with a half game lead over the Rockies. But instead they are 18-21 in fourth. Not a bad record all things considered, but we do have a tough home stand ahead. They have proven they can beat a good team though, so maybe there is a chance we can escape this home stand with a winning record. Tonight starts with the Nationals and Stephen Strasburg is on the hill for them. This is the first time pitching in Petco Park, so maybe he will get nervous in front of the home crowd. I for one hope he does and the Padres ruin his homecoming.

Hitting Prospect of the Day: Jeremy Baltz

Pitching Prospect of the Day: Max Fried

Tucson Padres: DNP

San Antonio Missions 8, Corpus Christi Hooks 10

Reymond Fuentes-CF: 1-4, RBI, BB, K

Rico Noel-RF: 2-5, RBI, K

Everett Williams-DH: 0-4, BB, 2K

Kalian Sams-LF: 1-4, 2b, BB, K, Run scored

Jake Blackwood-3B: 1-4, RBI, BB, 3 Runs scored

Jeudy Valdez-SS: 2-5, RBI, K

Eddy Rodriguez-C: 3-5, 2b, 2RBI, 2K, 2 Runs scored

Matt Andriese-SP: 4.0 IP, 10H, 8R, 3ER, 0BB, 4K, HR Allowed (L, 5-1)

Kevin Quackenbush-RP: 0.2 IP, H, 2BB, K

Notes: Matt Andriese, who has been very successful this season, endured his worst start of the year tonight. However, due to an error in the second, the inning was prolonged and Andriese suffered 5 unearned runs. Despite that, he did still allow 10 hits over just 4 innings and he received his first loss of the year. With an RBI single, Reymond Fuentes extended hit hitting streak to 7 games; he is hitting .378 over his last 10 games and is hitting .338 on the year.

Lake Elsinore Storm 5, Modesto Nuts 9

Cory Spangenberg-2B: 0-5, 4K

Yeison Asencio-RF: 1-4, RBI, K

Robert Kral-C: 1-4, HR(8), RBI, K, Run scored

Lee Orr-1B: 1-4

Luis Domoromo-DH: 1-4, 2b, K, Run scored

Jace Peterson-SS: 2-4, 2 2b, K, Run scored

Travis Jankowski-CF: 2-3, 2RBI, BB, K, Run scored, 3 SB(18)

John Hussey-SP: 1.2 IP, 6H, 6ER, 4BB, K (L, 0-1)

Notes: Robert Kral continues his hot hitting; he hit his 4th home run over his last 5 games and he owns 9 RBI and 8 hits over that span. On the year, Kral is hitting .342 with 8 home runs and 21 RBI. With 2 hits tonight, Travis Jankowski has hit safely in 8 of his last 9 games. He has raised his average to .265 over 132 AB’s. Prior to tonight’s game, Jace Peterson owned just 1 hit over his last 5 games. However, Peterson managed to collect twice as many hits tonight as he smacked 2 doubles. Hopefully Peterson keeps it up and breaks out of his slump. With tonight’s loss, Lake Elsinore’s record sits at a dismal 12-26.

Fort Wayne TinCaps 3, Bowling Green Hot Rods 0

Mallex Smith-DH: 2-4, 2b, K

Alberth Martinez-CF: 0-3

Maxx Tissenbaum-2B: 0-4

Gabriel Quintana-3B: 1-4, 2K, Run scored

Jeremy Baltz-LF: 2-4, HR(5), 2RBI, Run scored

Rodney Daal-C: 1-2, 2b, RBI, BB

Max Fried-SP: 6.0 IP, 4H, 0R, BB, 4K (W, 2-0)

Notes: Max Fried was lights out as he turned in the best start of his young professional career. In his previous start, Fried was part of a no-hitter. Over his last two starts, Fried has thrown 11.2 scoreless innings with 4 hits 5 walks and 12 strikeouts. Tonight’s start also marked the first time this season that Fried did not walk more than 1 batter. On the year, Fried owns a 2.35 ERA over 30.2 innings. Jeremy Baltz looks to get out of a May slump as tonight’s home run was his first home run of the month. His home run was more than enough offense for Fort Wayne tonight.

The Padres had a few flaws show up during the Tampa Bay series. First was that they had trouble holding a lead late in the game and second was that they were striking out too much. Despite the strikeouts they were still able to put runs on the board and make a game out of things. Yesterday was the first game in Baltimore and runs were coming at a premium for both teams as both pitchers looked good. Actually the Padres bats made Chris Tillman look good, while Andrew Cashner was spot on for most of the game. Tillman gave up a home run to Quentin (who should have had two in the game) and that was all the offense for the team until later. Cashner should have taken the win in this one, but again late in the game the lead was given up as he suddenly lost control of his changeup. However, when all looked to be lost, the Padres made a miraculous comeback and plated two in the top of the ninth. Enter Huston Street in the bottom and he quickly got two outs only to struggle to get that final out yet again. In the end the Padres came away victorious albeit just barely. Hopefully today’s game will come with less drama.
San Antonio was led by home runs from red-hot Kalian Sams and Everett Williams, while Rene Rivera’s perfect night at the plate highlighted an impressive offensive performance by Tucson. Lake Elsinore had the day off.

Notes: Despite scoring in just 2 separate innings, the T-Pads put up 12 runs on the board and collected 20 hits. After going through a rough slump, James Darnell has collected multiple hits in each of his past 2 games. The Tucson lineup on the year is hitting a whopping .290. On the pitching side, Wilfredo Boscan looked sharp in his second start with the T-Pads; over 2 starts Boscan has thrown 10 innings while allowing just 1 run. The T-Pads have won 9 of their last 10.

Notes: Every member of the starting 9 for the Missions tonight collected at least 1 base hit. Reymond Fuentes has put together a 6 game hitting streak; he is hitting .351 over his last 10 games and has raised his average to .338.

Notes: Joe Ross turned in his first quality start of the year, yet he still received the loss after today’s game. It was, however, encouraging to see Ross strike out 7 over 6 innings pitched and bounce back from a rough start in his last contest. Following tonight’s game, Ross owns a 3-1 record with a 3.11 ERA and 31 strikeouts over 37.2 innings pitched. This loss snapped a 6 game winning streak for the TinCaps.

The Padres had a day off yesterday to clear their heads of the sweep before heading off to Baltimore for a two game set that starts tonight. Before the sweep at the hands of the Rays, the Padres were 16-18 and sitting pretty good to maybe touch .500 again. After the sweep they have fallen to 16-21 and are back to clawing their way to the .500 mark again. The Orioles are putting together a good season so far as they are sitting at 23-15, just a game back of the Yankees in the AL East. As far as standings go for the Padres, the only good thing is that they aren’t in last place for the moment. They have a full game lead over the Dodgers, but are still 6.5 games back of the Giants. A two game sweep of the Orioles would be great to see before having to come home and face the Cardinals and Nationals. After that Rays series though I am not entirely convinced that it can happen. I am going to keep my expectations low and reserved for the next week and a half because of the quality of the teams. But you never know, this team has given us surprises in the past and maybe, just maybe they can put up a winning record over this next stretch.
Roach experienced his worst start of the year. Thad Weber pitched a very good start as the T-Pads won their 3rd game in a row.”
