Fort Wayne Player and Pitcher of the Month: August 2012
With just a few games left to play, Fort Wayne is the only franchise in the Padres minor league system confirmed to be in this years playoffs.
With several highly touted prospects within their ranks, the Tin caps can boast several standout performances for the month of August but Catcher Austin Hedges gets the nod. Taken in the 2nd round of the 2011 draft, Hedges had a commitment to UCLA which many draft experts did not think he would break. The Padres were able to convince him to sign a contract and he came into the system as one of the highest rated defensive catchers in many years. As a San Diego high school senior (Junipero Serra High), scouts raved about his skills behind the plate and his throwing ability. There was a bit of a question mark as to how his bat would develop and that is what we are celebrating here. After starting the season strong he tapered off a bit for the middle of the season but is finishing strong.
His .346/ .369/ .487 line for August is for 21 games and 78 AB
