Jon Garland...traitor 1 Year, 5 Months ago

News has broke that Jon Garland will be signing with the Dodgers. Isn't this the same team that left him off the playoff roster one year earlier?
Garland had the second best season of his career and he's cashing in, but going to the Dodgers is unacceptable. I for one, can't wait to watch him get blasted in 2011.

Gotta agree with you Steve. However it's nice to see the Dodgers over pay for him. The initial commitment of 5 Million is not to bad but the incentive laced option was bad baseball move. We'll see what happens.

I mentioned it on twitter, but I'll say it here as well...
I can't help but be reminded of Kevin Brown. Sure, he took more money to go to LA (as well as a few off-day private jet rides, if I remember right)..
I'm wondering if Garland couldn't wait to get out of SD. He got frustrated easily. He probably tried to hide it, but I could tell. Sometimes it was obvious. One day, E-Cab was having a bad game in the field, and Garland was just blowing up in the dugout because he was on the hook for the loss. Plus, the run support wasn't exactly great. So, he takes a little less money (initially) to play for LA (What exactly are these "vesting options?"), but he'll get more run support, which equates to more wins for him. Me Me Me... just like Brown. Maybe he'll fail like Brown too. I can't wait.

He gets to stay close to home, gets an option year based on incentives he has a good chance to meet. Depending on the bonuses built into 2011, this could turn into a 2 year, $16 million deal. Too much for a pitcher who's peripherals indicate a down turn in performance this coming season.
I'm not sure if I blame him that much; I'd want to know what the Padres were willing to offer him. He is a local kid so LA has even more appeal for that reason.
There are plenty of other options on the market for the Padres. Aaron Harang, Jeremy Bonderman, Vicente Padilla, Kevin Millwood, any of which could come in here and do what Garland did last year.

Oh, now that would be a good headline story!
Garland to LA, let's say Padilla to SD, and they face each other a few times during the season...who wins? lol

I would hardly call him a traitor. Jon wanted to sign for as much money as possible just like most MLB players. Also, he only played in SD for one season as a rental. Its not like he has any sort of deep rooted loyalty to the organization.

There is no such thing as loyalty in professional sports. The Padres didn't seem too interested in retaining him, so he moved on. The guy is essentially a journeyman, so he took the best offer. The guy pitched one year in San Diego. Get over it.

I wouldn't call him a traitor either. It's not like when he first showed up he promised big things or made a lot of guarentees in his time here. I actually don't mind him walking, and even less do I care that he went to eLgAy. That just means we'll see him in at least 5 starts against us and I hope we frustrate the hell out of the guy.
I never really cared for him either. He was a decent pitcher with good stuff, but you can just tell he didn't really enjoy being in SD or being a part of the team. His demeanor and body language were garbage so I really want to see him smacked around in 2011.

I agree, bro. He did a nice job for the Padres last year, but hes pitched for what, five teams now? I tip my cap for the job he did in 2010, and hope the Padres shell him in 2011. At least they get a supplemental pick for him. If Yorvit bails, that's essentially four 1st rounders.
