Cheri Bell covered all of the possibilities for rounding out the bench a few days ago here:
http://www.friarhood.com/padres-info/2010-off-season/704-2011-padres-the-bench.htmlhere. So who makes the cut?
We already know our starting 8: Hundley, Hawpe, Hudson, Headley, Bartlett, Ludwick, Maybin, and Venable.
We already know 4/5 of our rotation: Latos, Richard, Harang, and Stauffer.
We know most of our pen: Bell, Adams, Gregerson, Frieri, Thatcher, and Qualls.
We know that Moseley will likely be on the roster whether he starts or relieves.
We know that Denorfia is our 4th outfielder and Cantu is our backup corner infielder.
That leaves 4 spots. We will likely carry 12 pitchers and 13 position players, so that leaves 1 spot for a pitcher and 3 spots on the bench.
The pitcher will come down to who wins the 5th spot in the rotation. It appears to be a three person race with Moseley, Luebke, and LeBlanc. If Luebke or LeBlanc win, Moseley will likely round out the bullpen. If Moseley wins the 5th spot, they could give the last spot in the bullpen to Rule 5 Pick George Kontos.
We will need a backup catcher. I think it comes down to Greg Zaun, or Rob Johnson.
We will need a backup middle infielder that can play SS. The only viable candidate I see is Kevin Frandsen; although, he's not currently on the 40 man roster.
The last spot on the bench will probably be another outfielder. Since there isn't a left handed bat on the bench other than the possibility of the switch hitting Zaun, I think it goes to Patterson.
So, here's my 25 man roster:
Hundley
Hawpe
Hudson
Headley
Bartlett
Ludwick
Maybin
Venable
Denorfia
Cantu
Zaun
Patterson
Frandsen
Latos
Richard
Harang
Stauffer
Luebke
Moseley
Qualls
Thatcher
Frieri
Gregerson
Adams
Bell
What's your guess?
