A lot of talk about JHJ being able to compete for a starting position. I think of the guy as more the super utility guy and after a recent interview on 1360, he seems to be okay with that.
I think he will get over 300 ABs if he is in SD all year, but if the team is out of it will end up at trade bait in July.

yeah i really wouldnt mind him being trade bait.
(ofcourse unless the padres are in the hunt)
teams are always looking for defensive replacements for the playoffs and if the right deal comes along he is gone.

In 644 at-bats over the past two seasons — the approximate equivalent of one full season — Jerry Hairston Jr. has batted .281 with 16 home runs and 75 RBIs."
He is a perfect super utility man, that is a borderline starter on many teams, not just the Padres.
Jerry Hairston was also the YANKEES only trade deadline (or main) move last year, they obviously thought pretty highly of him too! The Yankees were also looking at him to possibly start in LF this year just to show how much other teams value him.
I expect him to get 300 Ab's easy and thats not taking injuries into consideration. Injuries are a part of the game, not to sound cliché but they will happen and the Padres seem to have mastered the art of injury. Hopefully our core( players) are healthy. I still think he is better suited for the utility role and not only that, but he seems to be satisfied being just that!

I would agree with him being a super utility guy. He did hit well with the Reds in 2008, but, last year struck out 108 times with three different teams. I like Jerry, but, don't see him as a starter. I do think that if Eck or Cabrera went down, he could do a decent job filling in.
