I don't know who does and doesn't tweet from the SDUTPadres, but what I do know is that a tweet they sent out this morning was really disturbing.

"Sad scene: 6:45 a.m. Outside players parking entrance, 5 adult middle-aged men camp out, baseball cards in hand seeking autographs."

I've collected baseball cards and autographs in my time, but as most people I moved on. I've been to Peoria and have seen guys get these autographs and even talked to them.

I admit it is a bit odd to me, but to each his own. Most of these guys love the chase of it and if that is what gets them pumped up, then it's fine with me.

If the UT wants to rip on people that are doing something they enjoy and not hurting anyone in the process, then the UT needs check itself.

Don't throw stones if you live in a glass house.

I both agree and disagree. If it's done on a personal level and out of a love for the game, I have no problem with it. But I've seen people who match that description who are just autograph hawks - claiming it's for a kid or a relative, then turning and selling whatever they get. It's usually easy to tell who's who, though, so I'd probably agree that the U-T is in the wrong here.

Ofro, I'm not calling into question the autograph seekers. I feel that's an entirely different topic to be honest.

What I am bothered about is how an established media outlet feels it is okay to take a shot at fans for no reason.

Come on man, this isn't meant to be harmful, it's humor.

No matter how you spin it, that "joke" was in poor taste.

Humor? How did you get humor from that quote? You see a LOL or a ?

Where do you see the humor in a journalist ripping on a defenseless group of fans?

Because it is making fun of the stereotype of old men and their love of baseball, trying to be a kid again, etc.

There are much worse things being said than this and American society gets offended too easily

On that, I agree with you. And the U-T has a track record of treating the fans poorly. I guess they figure it's their job as the "real" journalists or something...

It might be slighty 'poor taste', but to be offended and say the UT is 'attacking' fans, that's excessive

I don't think it's excessive in the least. It's calling a spade, a spade.

Who is a beat writer to rip on guys that want to meet players and collect autographs? My point is, this was unnecessary and in poor taste.

It begs the discussion that beat writers and most media people are so distanced from being a fan they can no longer relate.
