TOPIC: Getting rid of the Friar

Getting rid of the Friar 2 Years, 3 Months ago Karma: 8
Looks like the organization is trying to Phase out the Friar? I have to admit I am not a HUGE fan of the mascot, but I think he is good for the kids.

I love the Friar nick name. I think it brings a little something extra, it also reminds us all of the team history.

Plus it would really suck to try and redo the entire site!

If this gets any worse we may have to start a petition.

I wonder what Friar John has to say about this?

Quick Update:
In a statement from Tom Garkinkel regarding the Friar
"

We are not getting rid of the Friar. We never were getting rid of the Friar. We have never even discussed getting rid of the Friar. It was not ever, and is not now, a consideration to get rid of the Friar. The Friar has been a part of logo and our team since the beginning. I said "the Friar is an important part of our history" and somehow it got interpreted as "the Friar is history."

I love the Friar. In fact, I think I will name my next born son "Friar."

I totally against removing the friar, Hes unique and one of the coolest logos around. A lot of people like to talk about how the team should go back to the throwback unis, I for one think that the friar should go back to wearing brown. It suits him much better than the navy blue robe he wears.

I'd just feel bad for Friar Garkinkel once he enters grade school.

I wouldnt mind getting rid of the emblem on the unis. I think its kind of cheesy. I think Garfinkel said that they were keeping it. I say new ownership, there should be a new uni emblem.

I've always liked the swinging Friar on my gear. It's different than anything else out there. I could however do without that crazy looking mascot. When he's posted up behind the screen during games, it's kind of scary looking.

I like the emblem, but I wish they would go back to the old one. I don't like the slightly changed version they came up with in 1996.

That being said, I was under the impression that Garfinkel said originally that they were going to phase out the word friar, as in "friar faithful" and "friar fest". Notice that it has been renamed "fan fest". I don't think they meant they were going to phase out the swinging friar, just stop using the word and use "Padres" almost exclusively.
