Let's see if we can guess who the Padres will draft in the 9th position on June 7th. And if you have any opinions on the subsequent rounds, please share with everyone. There are lots of mock drafts out there so form an opinion and post it here.
My choice? Y. Grandal, catcher out of Miami. I can only hope he is still there when we draft.

Colon- No thanks. Average tools across the board and does not have impact talent.

Cox- He’s a hitter, but he doesn’t have great power, especially for a corner infielder.

Sale- Intriguing for his power, but he doesn’t exactly fit the athletic mold for an outfielder.

Castellanos- The Padres supposedly love this guy. He’ll be a 3B man at the next level and could be a 30 HR guy.

Grandal- He’s not “strong-armed” in fact his arm is the one tool that doesn’t grade out very well. He’s got a below average arm and the rest of his tools are average or a bit above. Not likely an impact talent.

Pomeranz, Whitson, McGuire, and Cole would be nice, but all of them may be off the board by #9.

I’m a big fan of Austin Wilson although he would be very hard to sign.

Wilson is my favorite for the top pick. Then, I like Castellanos or one of the many talented pitchers that may be available at #9. I would love to snag Justin O' Conner if he's still on the board in the second round. (not likely)

bkoke did mention Whitson above. I love the pick.

I really love the pick of Rico Noel. That kid is a stud waiting to happen, and a prototype Petco CF.

I did mention Whitson:

"Pomeranz, Whitson, McGuire, and Cole would be nice, but all of them may be off the board by #9."

I was saying more what I wanted than what I thought was going to happen. I love the pick of Whitson and I honestly didn't think he would be on the board for us. I'm also not a big fan of taking a pitcher with the first pick. It seems more risky and we've had bad luck with pitchers in the first round. Whitson has awesome potential and it looks like there isn't going to be a problem signing him.

When you take a high school player, you aren't expecting him to be in the majors too quickly. Pitchers with his kind of stuff do seem to rise faster though.

Yeah, we need a first rounder to shine and rocket through the system for once.
