Headley to Begin Rehab Assignment Friday

Chase Headley

The Padres announced today that third baseman Chase Headley is to begin a rehab stint with the single-A affiliate Lake Elsinore Storm immediately. Headley has been on the 15-Day DL since Spring Training after fracturing the tip of his left thumb on March 17th and has shown fast progress in returning to the infield, going so far as to take infield and batting practice prior to the recent Dodgers-Padres series at PETCO Park.

According to @CalStorm, Headley will be playing with the Storm for the weekend series against the Angels single-A affiliate Inland Empire 66ers. Headley will serve as the designated hitter in Friday and Sunday’s contests to become comfortable again after missing over three weeks of playing time.  This is welcoming news for Padres fans who have seen little productivity coming from the corner infield position that Headley once occupied.

Headley is also expected to also be present for a pre-game ceremony on Saturday prior to the Rockies/Padres game at 5:40pm to celebrate his Gold Glove and Silver Slugger awards from the 2012 season.
