Hitter/pitcher of the month: September

Hitter of the month:
3B – Chase Headley
September totals: 305/424/573 – 5 HR, 7 2B, 14 RBI
As strong months go, this was about as quiet as they get. Of course, Chase was better last September; but this year’s final month was his best, nearly hitting the magic 1.000 OPS figure. Headley’s September is made more remarkable by the fact he battled a foot injury nearly the entire time, even costing him a few games. Now comes the hard part: what to do with his contract after an other-worldly 2012 and a sub-par 2013.
Pitcher of the month:
RHP – Andrew Cashner
September totals: 2-1, 0.76 ERA, 0.42 WHIP, .115 opp. AVG, 7.98 K/9
There is no doubt at all that Cashner is the star of 2013. His September numbers are a little unfair to the other members of the rotation, in that Cash kept getting more rest between starts. However there is no denying his dominance while he posted a sub-1 ERA and allowed fewer than half a runner per inning. The only knock on him during his entire career has been a string of injuries. In 2013, the right hander showed just exactly what he can do when he is not injured. Cashner follows in a line of dominant, hard-throwing right handers going back to Jake Peavy and then to Mat Latos. Time will tell if Padre fans get to enjoy this new version for a long time to come.
