The San Diego Padres have seemingly finalized their roster for the start of the 2012 season by inking Micah Owings to an interesting one year deal worth $1M. It's interesting in that Owings agreed to accept a minor league salary if he is sent down, and he did not require an opt-out clause if he doesn't stick on the ML roster.

This signing is the epitome of the type of team-friendly deals the team should pursue in its offseasons. Arms can be had and for reasonable rates. The risk factor for pitchers is so much lower than for hitters, and we have the park to thank for that.

During the early moves of this offseason, GM Josh Byrnes and Co. seemed intent on trading for arms. As the team moved deeper into the offseason, a formula of trade for offense and sign pitching seemed to prevail, as the team traded for Carlos Quentin and Yonder Alonso and added via free agency the aforementioned Owings.

Owings brings an interesting mixed bag along with him to spring training. A career WHIP of 1.401 and a K/9 of 6.5 is nothing to get overly excited about. Plus, every 7.51 innings, he's giving up a home run. However, last season, Owings finished 8-0 (4 starts) with a 3.57 ERA. Additionally, his FIP has decreased significantly from an alarming 5.67 in 2009 to a slightly below average 4.47 last season. He added the cutter back into his repertoir last season, throwing it 77.7% of the time. Given that his 2011 numbers are much stronger, going with the cutter so often seems to have worked for him. However, he'll need to rely on at least one other pitch in order to hold down the 5th spot, or long relief for that matter.

Much has been said about Owings offensively, as well. While the tongue-in-cheek response of: "We've found our cleanup hitter" will garner a laugh or two, honestly, his offense is no joke, especially for a pitcher. In 203 at bats, his slash line is: .286/.313/.507 (.820 OPS) to go along with a beefy ISO of .222. In 45 at bats as a pinch hitter, Owings has hit: .244/.292/.444 (.736 OPS). While the numbers seem sexy on the surface, a K% of 32.3 keeps us grounded in what he can do with the stick: strike out quite a bit but run into one every now and then.

The beauty of this skill set, though, has more to do with what doesn't happen on the field, and that will be the need to pinch hit for him. The trade of Wade LeBlanc coupled with the cool $2.0M Dustin Moseley just earned, and Owings seems poised to win a long relief role with the club. When relievers come into the game early, the bullpen isn't the only facet of the team that gets taxed. Typically, the bench gets into the game early and often as well. Owings will allow those bats to be better served as the team works its way back from what is most likely a deficit.

Overall, with the improvements Owings has made the last few seasons, it seems he's poised to have a very strong 2012. He also has an excellent park for hurlers and two coaches in Balsley and Black who know how to handle a pitching staff. With that little bit of offensive boost, all signs point to this being an excellent acquisition for the team and a firm punctuation mark to what has been a solid first offseason for Byrnes.

One week until FanFest! Who's excited? I know I am. So many names have been listed to appear for the autograph sessions, you will definitely get a chance to meet your favorite Padre and some new ones as well. A couple names I noticed that are absent from the list are Orlando Hudson (big shocker there) and Carlos Quentin. Not sure if the list is finalized yet, but I am hoping Quentin will show. After all he was the biggest fish that we grabbed this offseason. Not sure if Micah Owings will be a late addition too or not. I'm sure they will release a final schedule later this week. Here are your Padres links for today:

Corey Brock answers fan's questions - Padres.com

On Joe Wieland and Robbie Erlin:

"I think Wieland will start the season with Triple-A Tucson and Erlin might begin back at Double-A San Antonio, though he might not be there long. Both appear to be very close to joining the Padres' starting rotation in 2012."

Bullpen Banter top 100 prospects for 2012: #51 Casey Kelly

"The player that we are left with has good command of three pitches that project as plus offerings. It is hard for me to see him being any less than a good number three starter."

We finally have our answer on Micah Owings. I won't spoil anything for you all because all the details can be found in the articles below. But I will sum it up and say that he is indeed a Padre for the 2012 season. With that move the 40 man roster is completely full, and I think it is safe to say that this is the team you will see going into spring training. In other Padres news, the team has a deal with Verizon to bring wifi to the entire ballpark. This means you can now surf the web from your smart phone right from your seat. I can see that as a good and bad thing I guess. Here are your links for today:

Padres agree to one year deal with Micah Owings - Padres.com

"Owings' deal is a Major League contract worth a reported $1 million, and he will report to Spring Training when pitchers and catchers arrive in Peoria, Ariz., on Feb. 19."

Micah Owings joins the Padres - Chicken Friars

"It’s a relatively low risk contract for both sides.  It is interesting, however, that Owings does not have an opt-out clause if he doesn’t make the Major League club."

So apparently the Padres have signed Micah Owings. The only problem is, to what deal and is it for real. There is no official word from the team yet, but there has been a lot of rumblings on the internet about it. First we got a report from Dan Hayes saying it was a minor league deal. Then Ken Rosenthal says it's a major league deal. But Bill Center has an article on the UT website that says we are only talking to him. So which is it? The answer is: I have no idea. That's the way baseball works. I'm sure we will have official word in the next few days, but until then I like to believe that it is a major league deal. Here are your links for today:

Padres work to avoid arbitration with 11 players - Padres.com

"Stein and several other front-office personnel -- including general manager Josh Byrnes -- completed a momentous task on Tuesday, when they agreed to terms with pitcher Dustin Moseley, the last of their 11 players who were eligible for salary arbitration."

San Diego Padres sign Micah Owings - Call To The Pen

"The San Diego Padres have added some pitching depth by signing former Arizona Diamondbacks starter Micah Owings to a one-year deal worth $1 million. Initial reports said that this deal was a minor-league contract, but it was later reported to be a one-year pact between the Padres and Owings."

The San Diego Padres added a starting pitcher to big league camp by signing Micah Owings to a minor league deal today according to Dan Hayes. Owings holds a 32-31 career record with a 4.91 ERA in 5 seasons with the Reds and D-Backs. Last season, he was 8-0 with a 3.57 ERAwith the D-Backs, starting 4 games for them.

This Spring, he will be comepting for a spot in the rotation or to be a long reliever out of the pen. If he makes it onto the big league roster, he will definitely benefit from PETCO's huge dimensions.

If he is not able to contibute on the mound, we could still use his bat off the bench. He is one of the best hitting pitchers in the league with 9 career home runs and 35 RBI and a .286 batting average.

It is now being reported by Ken Rosenthal that Owings signed a one year "major league" deal for one million dollars.

Who do you think will have more home runs this year? Mark Kotsay or Micah Owings? Who would you rather use if we needed a big pinch hit late in the game?

Happy February to you all! There is a lot to look forward to this month when it comes to baseball. Pitchers and Catchers report very soon (18 days) which means spring training is about to start. Also on the 11th is FanFest, which will be a lot of fun for all the fans. I went last year and had a great time. I can only imagine that the crowd will be even bigger this year. Also as of yesterday the Padres have signed all their arbitration elgible players. Finally coming to terms with Dustin Moseley on a one year contract. There's more information on all that below. Here are your links for today:

The San Diego Padres have agreed to terms with P Dustin Moseley on a one-year deal and have now reached an agreement with all their arbitration-eligible players. Moseley was signed by the Friars last season and became a starting pitcher coming out of the Spring. He struggled to get any run support, like the rest of the staff, and had a 3-10 record. He finished with a 3.30 ERA in 120 innings before dislocating his left shoulder after getting a base hit.

Former Padre Chad Qualls signed with the Phillies this morning. He's their problem now. Let's not forget (or maybe we should) how well he pitched when the Padres were in Philadelphia. In case you need a reminder he gave up three homeruns to hand the Phils the game. A game that the Padres had in the bag. He had decent numbers at Petco, but his road numbers were just okay. Maybe it was a fluke that night, I mean a sinker ball pitcher isn't supposed to give up a homerun let alone three. I think our bullpen will be just fine without him and with the new additions that we have brought in. Here are your links for today:

Bullpen Banter is compiling their top 100 prospects: #98 Keyvius Sampson

"Sampson is one of the guys on the list I have BOLDED, italicized, and underlined, as I expect him to be in the Cal League next year, and I am hoping to get a long look at him.  He’s definitely a guy to keep an eye or two on."

A story of how the Padres can sneak up on everyone - Chicken Friars

"In his [Bill Center] chat the other day, he said we shouldn’t expect another magical 2010 season. As unlikely as it may be to some, the Padres have some real talent and could make a move this season. But the move has to start at home."

Byrnes Executing the Plan PDF Print E-mail
Written by Glen Miller

Newly appointed Padres GM Josh Byrnes has been a busy bee so far this winter. Since assuming the leadership mantle from his predecessor, Jed Hoyer, Byrnes has: Traded Mat Latos, the club’s best starting pitcher; added power-hitting corner OF Carlos Quentin; brought in veteran OF-1B and clubhouse leader Mark Kotsay as a free agent; upgraded at backup catcher with John Baker; replaced outgoing UFA closer Heath Bell with Huston Street; dealt one of the prize pieces from last winter’s Adrian Gonzalez deal, Anthony Rizzo, in a deal for reliever Andrew Cashner; and re-signed nine of the team’ eleven potential arbitration-eligible players ahead of the deadline to exchange salary numbers (a tenth, Clayton Richard, agreed to terms shortly afterwards). Undoubtedly, while the team has mostly steered clear of free agency, Byrnes has turned over a large chunk of the club’s roster in short order.

While it’s nearly impossible to guess how the on-field product will perform given the high turnover rate from last season, one thing is clear; Byrnes has a plan and he has wasted little time implementing it. His goal this winter was to continue to add to the deepening pool of young talent while improving the team for an unlikely but hopeful postseason run next season. Yes, the Padres will obviously miss Latos and the trade that sent him to Cincinnati for a prospect-heavy return is difficult to view as a step to improve the product on the field nest season. But Byrnes has still accomplished both goals with the plethora of deals he has made as GM.

Let’s take a look at how some of Byrnes’ winter acquisitions will impact the Friars organization whether for just this season, the future or both starting with the Latos move.
