2011 Season - Know Thy Enemy

Sharing is Caring

fishstripesCraig from popular Marlins blog Fishstripes.com was nice enough to do a little Q&A about the fish as they head into San Diego.

What is this drama with Logan Morrison all about?
The Marlins organization claimed they were sending Morrison down to Triple-A because of his .249 batting average. But the truth be told, he was sent down for being too outspoken.  LoMo earlier criticized the front office for the firing of then hitting coach John Mellee. He was not alone in this, several other players also complained.  He later called out Hanley Ramirez for not respecting the team; he was not alone in this one either.

Then LoMo complained about the Marlins Community Organization for botching a charity event he had put together, this one was pretty recent. A few days later after staying an extra hour at an autograph session he asked the player's union rep (Wes Helms) if he had to attend a player’s photo session with the fans sponsored by the Marlins Community Organization, the rep said no. So LoMo skipped the event.  Later that night he was optioned to New Orleans.

The Marlins have always had a problem with LoMo being publicly outspoken. They hated the fact that he said what he thought to the press and on twitter and wanted to send him a message that this would not be tolerated. As the saying goes, the nail that sticks out gets hammered and LoMo got hammered.

How do you feel about the trade this offseason that netted the Marlins Ryan Webb and Edward Mujica for Cameron Maybin?

I understood it at the time. Maybin, while full of potential, wasn't living up to expectations and the Marlins are fairly deep with young outfielders and needed help in the bullpen. So they made the trade. Should the Marlins have given him a little more time to blossom? I don't think so. The trade was probably the best thing to happen to young Mr. Maybin in his short career. He received a breath of fresh air by going to a team that was really excited to give him a shot. There is a lot to say about leaving a place that is viewing you with a skeptical eye to one that is sees you with optimism.
While Webb and Mujica have both suffered injuries this season, they did perform satisfactorily when they were healthy and did add strength to the pen. So I guess what am saying is that I am happy for Maybin, since I'm not sure it would've happened with the Fish, and the Marlins pen is better. Also I have no doubt that in a few years this will be one of those trades where everyone will look at it and say: You traded Maybin for what?!
But it was a trade that needed to be made, if only for Maybin's sake. Needless to say, I like the kid.

Will the new Marlins stadium bring out fans to support the team?

Who knows? In the first year, yes. The new stadium will be a novelty and people will go to the park just to experience it. Now after that, it is anyone's guess. The fact that it is in one of the two population centers in South Florida will help. The present stadium is almost exactly between the two centers and is a long drive for most everyone to see a game. Not to mention its sight-lines suck for baseball.
So the residents of Miami will be a lot closer to the stadium and that is where most of the season ticket holders live. So weekday night games should see some sort of a boost. Probably the most important factor after that is whether the Marlins are winning. In South Florida there a ton options to choose from when considering where you are going to spend your entertainment dollars, and if the Fish aren't winning the new stadium won't matter. It will be another Pittsburgh situation. Cool park, but no one goes to the games. South Florida fans, on a whole, are pretty fair weather fans.
We will just have to wait and see how this plays out.

What are you looking for from the team the last half of the season?

Not a lot to be real honest. I'm hopeful they will start putting things together and maybe finish the season at .500. Mainly, I would just like to see the Marlins get healthy for a change. Last night the Triple-A club started as many opening day Marlins in their lineup as the big club did. Obviously the ones in Triple-A are rehabbing. Also, they need to start winning some games at home. The Marlins are 24-39 at home while posting a road record of 33-27.  What it takes to play better at home, I don't know. But they need to figure it out.
