Kyle Blanks Traded to the Oakland A’s for Jake Goebbert and PTBNL

After days of speculation, 1B/OF Kyle Blanks was traded to the Oakland A’s today in exchange for OF Jake Goebbert and a PTBNL via Jerry Crasnick of

Goebbert, a 13th Round Draft Pick in the 2009 MLB draft by Houston, was hitting .257 with the Triple-A Sacramento River Cats with 25 RBI and 6 Homeruns. The 26 year old was traded to the Oakland Athletics organization in 2013 and holds a career .278 batting average with 343 RBI and 59 Homeruns in the Minors.

While speculative, the Blanks trade could be seen as a simple roster move to aid the Padres club who has been inundated with a plethora of outfielders, including Carlos Quentin, Cameron Maybin, Seth Smith, Chris Denorfia, Will Venable, and the pesky utility man Alexi Amarista.

Blanks, a 27 year-old 42nd Round Draft Pick out of the 2004 MLB draft, made his major league debut with the Padres back in 2009. Over six seasons with the team, Blanks has posted a .228 batting average with 98 RBI and 28 homeruns. Blanks career has been riddled with inconsistent playing time due to various injuries and roster moves within the Padres organization.

Blanks only played in 5 games with the major league club this season before being optioned back down to Triple-A El Paso, collecting two hits and striking out three times in 10 at bats (.200 batting average).

Blanks has been a fan favorite at times, collecting the nickname the “88-Train” due to his large stature and size, weighing 265 pounds and standing at over 6’ 6”. Blanks was set to make $988,000 this season with arbitration coming up in 2015. Blanks is due to become a free agent in 2016.

In addition to Goebbert, the Padres will be receving another player-to-be-named-later, presumably another minor league roster filler for any of the Padres minor league affiliates.

Blanks will be joining the Oakland A’s later today, and presumably Goebbert will join the El Paso Chihuahuas at some point as well.

Blanks was hitting well in El Paso .264/.364/.651 with nine HRs in 83 ABs for the Chihuahuas this season.

OF Jake Goebbert will provide minor league depth in the OF, in Sacramento this year he hit .257/.371/.505.

Two Cents:

Blanks was never given a shot in San Diego.  You can’t keep putting a 6’6″ 265 in the OF and hoping he won’t get hurt.  If the A’s play him at 1B/DH he will provide plenty of pop.  Blanks was passed over for Anthony Rizzo, then Yonder Alonso without getting a real shot to play 1B on a regular basis.  Now Blanks will finally have a chance to play his natural position.

The move does clear up 1B at the AAA level for Tommy Medica and Cody Decker to platoon.  The Padres continue to be all in with light hitting Alonso and see Medica as the backup plan.
