Max Fried Ranked 3rd Among LHP Prospects

Today, Jonathan Mayo of came out with his Top 10 LHP prospect list for 2014. Ranking 3rd was the Padres’ 1st overall pick in 2012, Max Fried.

Fried enjoyed a successful year with Class A Fort Wayne. Over 23 starts, Fried amassed 118.2 IP and a 3.49 ERA. Fried struck out 100 batters over that span. Mayo stated that all three of Fried’s pitches (Fastball, Power Curve, Changeup) project to be at least major league average while praising his power curveball as his best pitch and noting his improving changeup.

Fried’s biggest shortcoming in 2013 was his lack of control as he walked 56 batters last year. However, Mayo notes that he should be able to straighten out his control issues as he gains more experience. Fried will likely begin the 2014 season playing for Class High-A Lake Elsinore where he should continue to improve and rise on prospect lists.
