Of the 2 victories during the week, the 10/28 game was a 15-1 victory in a forfeit game that was then changed to a called game, against Phoenix that ended in the 8th inning. Manager Don Mattingly had run through all his pitchers by the middle of the inning and using a position player to pitch was not an option so the game was called due to lack of personnel. The forfeit decision was changed so that the stats for the game would count in the standings.
Padres minor leaguer Andrew Parrino got the most playing time of Padres representatives with the Saguaros during the week. He appeared in 3 games and was 3 for 8 with a double, run and strikeout and a .286 average overall. Reliever Alexis Lara continued to struggle in his first appearance of the week (10/23) with 0.1 IP, 3 H, 4 R/ER, BB and 2 HR to increase his ERA to 33.75. He made 2 more appearances during the week with 2 IP, 2 , 1 R/ER, 2 BB, SO, HR and finished with a 21.21 ERA. Reliever Brad Brach continues his dominance although he is being used sparingly and not as a closer. He appeared in 3 games with 3.1 IP, no hits, 1 BB, a 1-0 record and 0.00 ERA. That gives him a total of 7.1 IP with 1 hit, 2 BB, 1 SO and 1 hold to go with his 1 win. Reliever Colt Hynes appeared in 1 game and had 1 IP. He allowed no hitter to reach base and lowered his ERA to 2.57. 2B Cole Figueroa appeared in 2 games, was 1 for 5, scored a run, had a walk and a strikeout and is carrying a .278 avg. As a side note, the other winter leagues have also begun play and next week there will be an update on how the Padres representatives in those leagues are performing. It was noted at the end of the regular season that Everth Cabrera was being encouraged by the Padres to take part in winter league this year. That is in stark contrast to last year when they asked him to sit out the season and rest. As we all know, that did not work out too well for Everth and we all hope for a better off-season for him this year. He and other members of the organization that are playing during the winter will be covered starting with the update next week.
