Sharing is Caring

2010_Caribbean_SeriesMembers of the San Diego Padres organization playing winter league ball were in flux during the last 2 weeks. 2B Cole Figueroa was traded to Tampa Bay, along with pitcher Cesar Ramos, for SS Jason Bartlett.  We here at Friarhood will especially miss Cole. He was fun to watch with the Storm last season and has been a friend to Friarhood during the past year.

3B/2B Jacob Blackwood, obtained by the Padres in the AAA phase of the Rule V draft, is playing in the Venezuelan winter league with a .261/.292/.435 line. It is worth noting that Jacob, at 25, has not played above high A ball in the minor leagues.

3B Edinson Rincon joined winter league play with the Dominican league just this week. Newly acquired Eric Patterson, the PTBNL in the Adrian Gonzalez trade, is also playing winter ball with the Dominican league. His line of .175/.316/.286 was as of Nov 21. He has not played since that time, for unknown reasons.

Free agent SS Gregorio Petit was signed by the Padres on Dec. 3 and is playing winter ball for Venezuela. The 26 yr old has played three seasons in AAA and is currently hitting .227/.338/.300 in 33 games and 110 AB’s.

Luis Durango hasn’t played since Nov 28.

Emmanuel Quiles hasn’t played since Dec. 3

Everth Cabrera is hitting .357/.439/.446 in 15 games and 56 AB with 3 2B, 3B, 3 RBI, 7 BB, 13 SO and 5 SB. He appears to finally be healthy again.

Oscar Salazar has a .262/.313/.362 line in 36 games and 149 AB.

C Ali Solis is currently at .278/.333/.370 in 39 games and 108 AB. He has 33 Soto go with 9 BB. He has hit 2 HR and 4 2B for 16 RBI.

SS Jesus Lopez  has played in 59 games with 195 AB with 9 2B, 3B, 6 HR, 32 RBI, 15 BB, 17 SO and a .277/.332/.426 line. Jesus, 23, signed with the Padres out of Mexico at 17. He played most of last season with the Lake Elsinore Storm.

Both CoreyAdamson and Michael Collins have played sparingly in the Australian league.

Pitcher Matt Buschmann continuesto impress. His 7-2 record and 2.83 ERA in 12 games started and 76.1 IP gives him a 0.98 WHIP and .182 avg against. He has 25 BB to 55 SO over the winter so far.

Reliever Hayden Beard, 25, who split last season between Fort Wayne and Lake Elsinore, just arrived to begin playing with the same Australian team that Collins plays for.

Reliever Alexis Lara has begun play in the Dominican and is 0-0 with a 2.84 ERA in 5 games.

Radhames Liz has started 10 games with 54.2 IP and has a 4-3 record and 1.65 ERA. He has 20 BB to 45 SO with a 1.01 WHIP and .184 avg against. Time will tell if this improved consistency will carry over to the big leagues. Liz pitched last season in AAA with an 8-8 record and 4.83 ERA in 25 games with 22 games started.

Juan Oramas is currently 2-1 with a 3.85 ERA in 9 games started and 35 IP. He has 22 BB to 39 SO with a 1.43 WHIP and .219 avg against.

Stiven Osuna remains on the DL.

Luis Perdomo is now 2-0 with a 1.93 ERA in 12 games and 9.1 IP.

Mauricio Tabachnik is 1-0 with a 4.24 ERA in 14 games and 17 IP. He has a 1.71 WHIP and .319 avg against.

It is encouraging that Cabrera seems to have regained his health and that Buschmann and Liz are pitching well.  It will also be worth watching what Rincon does in his winter experience. His ceiling his high but his development has been inconsistent, especially on the defensive side. There is much discussion about changing his position from 3B to OF but he is listed as a 3B on his team roster. Since this will be his first week playing it will take  some time to see how he progresses in winter ball.
