San Antonio returns to their winning ways behind 7 impressive innings from Case Kelly. Rymer Liriano shows off all his tools in a Tincaps win over Great Lakes.
Tucson Padres 3, Fresno Grizzlies 4 Everth Cabrera-SS: 0-4, BB, K Logan Forsythe-2B: 4-5, RBI Kyle Blanks-LF: 0-5, 3 K’s Aaron Cunningham-RF: 2-5, Run scored, 2 K’s Matt Clark-1B: 2-4, BB, HR (16), 2 runs scored, 2 K’s Cedric Hunter-CF: 2-4, 2b, K Jon Leicester-SP: 5.1 IP, 6 hits, 2 BB, 3 RA, 2 ER, HR allowed, 4 K’s Greg Burke-RP: 1.2 IP, BB, 3 K’s
Notes: Matt Clark is off to a good start in July after a red-hot June. Last month Clark hit .398 with an equal number of walks and strikeouts and 6 homers. Since July 30th Clark has blasted 4 home runs, increasing his total to 16 on the season. The 6’5” left handed batter has 68 home runs total over the last 2 and a half season.
San Antonio Missions 10, Northwest Arkansas Naturals 2 Dan Robertson-RF: 1-5, Run scored Blake Tekotte-CF: 3-4, BB, HR (13), 2 RBI, 2 runs scored, K Jaff Decker-LF: 0-4, BB, Run scored, K Jedd Gyorko-3B: 1-2, 2 BB, HR (2), 4 RBI, 3 runs scored Andy Parrino-SS: 1-2, BB, HR (1), 3 RBI, 2 runs scored, K Anthony Contreras-2B: 2-4, 2b, K Dean Anna-DH: 2-3, 2b, RBI, Run scored, K Casey Kelly-SP: 7.0 IP, 5 hits, 2 BB, 2 ER, HR allowed, 3 K’s Erik Hamren-RP: 2.0 IP, 1 hit, 2 K’s
Notes: Andy Parrino has had a hit in each of his first 3 games with the Missions so far. He has 4 hits in those games including a double and a home run. Jedd Gyorko has played in 6 games so far as a Mission, and had multiple hits in 3 of them. He already has 2 doubles and 2 homers in his first 6 games, giving him an impressive .708 slugging percentage.
Lake Elsinore Storm 4, Visalia Rawhide 7 Jeudy Valdez-SS: 2-5, RBI, Run scored, K Jason Hagerty-C: 3-5, RBI, K Nate Freiman-1B: 0-3, BB, RBI Jonathan Galvez-2B: 1-4, 2b Mike Baxter-RF: 2-3, BB, K Danny Payne-CF: 1-4, 2b, RBI, Run scored, K Chris Tremblay-3B: 1-3, BB, Run scored Jose DePaula-SP: 5.0 IP, 9 hits, 2 BB, 5 ER, 4 K’s Jeff Ibarra-RP: 1.1 IP, 1 hit
Notes: Jason Hagerty made a push into many Padres top prospect lists this last offseason with a .303/.423/.494 season and his been nearly as impressive in the CAL league this year. He is still batting over .300 and getting on-base at a solid rate, but his strikeout rates are up and his walk rates are down, both to significant degrees. On the positive side of those changes Hagerty has improved on already impressive power. He is on pace to surpass last year’s marks in doubles, triples, and home runs.
Fort Wayne Tincaps 5, Great Lakes Loons 3 Rico Noel-CF: 0-4, 2 runs scored, 3 K’s, 2 stolen bases (20) Rymer Liriano-RF: 1-4, 2 RBI, Stolen base (41), Outfield assist Oscar Garcia-LF: 2-3, RBI, Run scored, K, Stolen base (1) Connor Powers-3B: 0-1, 3 BB Cole Tyrell-1B: 1-4, RBI Chris Bisson-2B: 1-4, Run scored, K Dennis O’Grady-SP: 6.0 IP, 4 hits, BB, ER, 5 K’s
Notes: O’Grady pitched 7 innings in the AZL before joining the Tincaps, and has allowed only three runs in two starts since then. Like former Tincap Nate Freiman, O’Grady is a graduate of Duke University. Unlike the 6’7” Freiman, O’Grady does not cut an imposing silhouette, he stands a modest 5’10”. During his 2 starts O’Grady has walked only 3 batters and has struck out 11. After experiencing a resurgent June in which he hit .307, Chris Bisson is having difficulties at the plate once again. In 8 July games he has only hit safely 6 times and struck out 10.
Eugene Emeralds 7, Yakima Bears 6 Jace Peterson-SS: 0-3, BB, Run scored, K Cory Spangenberg-2B: 0-3, BB, 2 K’s Jeremy Rodriguez-C: 0-2, RBI, K Kyle Gaedele-CF: 1-3, BB, RBI, 2 runs scored Lee Orr-RF: 0-3, BB, RBI, Run scored, K, Stolen base (5) Daniel Garce-DH: 1-4, 2 K’s Zach Kometani-1B: 2-4, HR (1), 2 RBI, 2 runs scored, K Mykal Stokes-LF: 0-3, Run scored, K, Stolen base (5) Jorge Miyenty-3B: 1-3, 2 RBI Matt Andriese-SP: 3.0 IP, 3 K’s Cody Hebner-RP: 2.0 IP, 1 hit, BB, 3 K’s Jeremy Gigliotti-RP: 2.1 IP, 3 K’s
Notes: Former SDU Torero Zach Kometani hit his first homer as a professional and continues to be a key figure in the Emeralds lineup. When Cory Spanegenberg makes his inevitable departure from Eugene, it seems likely that Kometani will take up residence in either the 3 or 4 holes. 2011 4th round pick Cody Hebner saw his first action as pro, striking out 3 in 2 innings of work.
AZL Padres 5, AZL Royals 4 Alberth Martinez-CF: 2-3, 2 BB, 3b, HR (2), 2 runs scored, K, Stolen base (7) Corey Adamson-LF: 2-5, RBI, K Dan Killian-1B: 2-4, RBI Yair Lopez-RF: 0-4, 3 K’s Justin Miller-2B: 2-4, 3b, Run scored, K Jairo Gomez-C: 1-4, Run scored, K, Stolen base (2) Uber Paz-SP: 5.0 IP, 7 hits, BB, 3 RA, 1 ER, HR allowed, 2 K’s Jean Corpas-RP: 2.0 IP
Notes: Alberth Martinez has been among the few bright spots in the AZL Padres line-up this season. The 20 year old Venezuelan has put together a .303 batting average through 15 games with 8 extra base hits and 7 stolen bases. Dan Killian has played more sparingly, he has appeared in only 6 games, but he too has posted an impressive batting average at .389.
