Keyvius Sampson holds the Loons to only 1 hit in 4.1 innings with 7 K’s but the Tincaps lose anyway. Simon Castro goes 8 strong innings for the second straight start. Samuel Deduno strikes out 8 while transitioning back to a starting role. Tucson Padres 2, Salt Lake City Bees 3
Notes: After scoring a run in the 7th and 9th the T-Pads tied the game up. Unfortunately the struggling Brad Brach came in to pitch the 10th innings and allowed a lead-off single, a sac bunt, and a walk off single to Efren Navarro. Brad has allowed runs in 4 of his last 5 outings while issuing 2 walks. He allowed only 5 walks total in 42 TEX league appearances. His PCL ERA stands at 6.35 after 11.1 innings. Anthony Rizzo has tallied 15 hits in his last 7 games, including 10 extra base hits, 5 of them homers.
San Antonio Missions 3, Frisco Rough Riders 4
Notes: Simon Castro has posted consecutive starts of 8 innings and at least 9 K’s. Early in the season Simon struggled mightily to adjust to the PCL, his mechanics got out of whack and his confidence suffered, forcing him back to extended spring training to get his mechanics right. Castro seems to be rounding back into the form that made him one of the Texas leagues 3 best pitchers last season, he has struck out 30 batters while walking only 4 in his last 5 starts. In his last 10 starts he has never allowed more than 2 walks.
Lake Elsinore Storm 3, High Desert Mavericks 2
Notes: 7 K’s matches a season high for Jose DePaula, who has had an up and down season. DePaula emerged as a prospect last season in 14 starts for the Tincaps after spending his first 3 pro seasons in short-season leagues. In 85 innings last season DePaula allowed only 71 hits and 20 walks while striking out 69 and allowing only 31 earned runs. Reymond Fuentes delivered a dramatic walk-off hit in an even more dramatic 9th inning. To lead off the inning Jake Blackwood was gunned down at third trying to stretch a double into a triple. With two out catcher Jhonaldo Pozo rapped a single up the middle and was replaced by pinch runner Wande Olabisi. After pinch-hitter Tommy Medica was hit by a pitch Reymond Fuentes ground out a tough AB and delivered a walk-off broken bat single after fouling off 4 straight pitches.
Fort Wayne Tincaps 4, Great Lakes Loons 6
Notes: Several late home runs by the Loons doomed the Tincaps to a loss despite a 1-hit performance by Keyvius Sampson. Sampson has experienced a real break-out season, along with his team mate Rymer Liriano. Keyvius has put together an 8-2 record with a 2.81 ERA in 18 starts. While his traditional stats show a pitcher who has had a good season, more specific stats paint a clearer picture. In 89.2 innings he has allowed only 57 hits and 35 walks while striking out 105 batters and holding opponents to a .178 batting average.
Eugene Emeralds 6, Spokane Indians 8
Notes: Jace Peterson has hits in 5 of his last 6 games, including 2 multi-hit games. He has stolen 6 bases and taken 7 walks during that same stretch. He is maintaining an impressive .345 OBP despite his disappointing .226 batting average. Donavan Tate went 2-5 but broke a streak of 5 consecutive games with at least 1 stolen base.
AZL Padres 5, AZL Athletics 6
Notes: On a team that has not experienced many positive pitching performances this season, Uber Paz has been a bit of a bright spot. In his last 2 starts he has allowed only 8 hits and 3 ER while walking only 1 batter. He holds a 4.86 ERA in 37 innings with 29 K’s and 8 walks.
