Padres Daily Farm Round-Up: 4-30-11 Tucson pulls off a narrow victory in yet another slugfest with the Sky Sox. Dueling Deckers go yard again and maintain their grip on the Texas League. Jedd Gyorko’s pair of homers carries The Storm to victory.
Tucson Padres 9, Colorado Springs Sky Sox 8 Everth Cabrera-SS: 1-5, 2b Run scored Logan Forsythe-2B: 2-5, 2b 3 K’s Anthony Rizzo-1B: 2-5, 2b, 3b, 2 RBI, Run scored, K Jesus Guzman-3B: 2-4, BB, 2b, 2 RBI, 2 runs scored, 2 K’s Aaron Cunningham-RF: 1-3, BB, 2 RBI, 2 runs scored Matt Clark-LF: 1-4, 2, RBI, K Guillermo Quiroz-C: 2-4, HR (1), 2 RBI, K Simon Castro-SP: 5.0 IP, 8 hits, 3 BB, 6 ER, 3 K’s, 2 HR alowed Pat Neshek-RP: 1.1 IP, BB, Save (1)
Notes: The T-Pads would, once again, score their final run in the late innings to secure a narrow victory over the rival Sky Sox. The hero this time would be Matt Clark, whose one out double plated Aaron Cunningham in the bottom of the seventh to give Tucson the lead. Again it was a struggle for Simon Castro, whose season ERA now stands at 9.0 after 5 starts. Castro has yet to hold an opponent under three runs, three walks, and has not worked past the 6th inning. His opponents are batting .321 against him. Logan Forsythe and Everth Cabrera each hit their 5th doubles of the year.
San Antonio Missions 8, Midland Rock Hounds 4 Dan Robertson-CF: 2-5, 2 2b Jaff Decker-LF: 1-4, HR (8), 2 RBI, 2 K’s James Darnell-3B: 2-5, 2b, 2 runs scored, K Kyle Blanks-1B: 0-4, K Sawyer- Carroll-RF: 2-3, BB, 2 runs scored, K, 2 Stolen bases (2) Cody Decker-DH: 1-4, HR (10), 2 RBI, 2 K’s Aaron Breit-SP: 5.0 IP, 8 hits, BB, 4 ER, 3 K’s, HR allowed, W (1-0) Josh Spence-RP: 2.0 IP, 1 hit, BB, K, Pickoff Brad Brach-RP: 1.0 IP, 2 K’s
Notes: Even when Blake Tekotte got a day off the Missions got great production from the lead-off spot in Dan Robertson. Josh Spence pitched his 4th straight scoreless appearance with at least one strikeout and has been picking runners off at a surprising rate. Cody and Jaff Decker (no relation) are first and second, respectively, on the Texas league Home Run leaderboards. Blake Tekotte is eighth on that list and James Darnell is 13th. Of the 10 players with an OPS over 1.0 in the Texas Laegue, four are Missions.
Lake Elsinore Storm 7, San Jose Giants 5 Reymond Fuentes-CF: 2-4, BB, 3b, 2 runs scored Jedd Gyorko-DH: 2-5, 2 HR (5), 3 RBI, 3 runs scored Edinson Rincon-3B: 1-4 Rico Noel-LF: 0-4, Run scored, K, Stolen base (9) Jonathan Galvez-2B: 1-4, HR, 2 K’s Nate Freiman-1B: 2-4, 2b Chris Fetter-SP: 5.0 IP, 8 hits 3 K’s, 5 runs allowed, 3 ER Miles Mikolas-RP: 1.0 IP, 1 K, Save (1)
Notes: Reymond Fuentes took a walk in consecutive games for the first time this season. Jedd Gyorko continues to be the human hit parade, making multi-hit games a habit instead of an occasional thrill. He has 7 multi hit games in the last 10 and 35 total hits in a mere 23 games. Couple those numbers with an impressive 15:11 K:BB ratio and you have a young third baseman making a sustained push for early promotion. Rico Noel has been on base in 8 of the last 10 games.
Fort Wayne Tin Caps 0, Dayton Dragons 4 Chris Bisson-2B: 1-3, K Rymer Liriano-RF: 1-4, 3 K’s, Stolen base (2) Jake Blackwood-3B: 0-3 Oscar Garcia-LF: 1-4, K Andrew Werner-SP: 6 IP, 6 hits, 3 BB, 1 ER, 4 K’s, L (1-3)
Notes: The Tincap offense managed to get only three runners aboard during the entire game and saddled starter Andrew Werner with his third loss despite holding his opponent to two runs or less in 3 of his last 4 starts. Again the Tincaps would be utterly dominated by The Dragon’s starter. This time around it was Daniel Corcino who would limit the ‘Caps to just 3 hits while striking out 5 over 6 innings of work. The loss is the Tincaps 4th in a row and 5th out of their last 6. During that 6 game stretch the ‘Caps have scored only 17 Runs, 14 coming in 2 games. The Tincaps have only one victory in the last 2 weeks.
