Tucson Padres 3, Fresno Grizzlies 4 Anthony Rizzo-1B: 2-4, 2b, K Cedric Hunter-CF: 1-4, HR (1), 2 runs scored, K, Outfield assist Matt Clark-LF: 1-4, K Aaron Cunningham-RF: 1-4, RBI Jesus Guzman-3B: 1-4, Luis Martinez-C: 0-4, 3 K’s John Leicester-SP: 7.0 IP, 3 hits, 3 BB, 1 run allowed, 0 ER, 3 K’s
Notes: John Leisecter matched his longest appearance of the season with 7 innings. He began the year in the bullpen but has been starting since April 19th after Josh Geer went down with injury. The veteran flyball artist has put together a 2.67 ERA between his 2 relief appearances and his 5 starts. Leicester would have picked up his second victory as well had it not been for Luis Perdomo’s second blown save since taking over for Evan Scribner. Perdomo has walked 17 batters this season compared to only 14 K’s in 20.2 innings of work.
San Antonio Missions 9, Corpus Christi Hooks 1 Dan Robertson-CF: 1-3, BB, 2 Runs scored, Outfield assist Jaff Decker-LF: 2-4, Run scored, K James Darnell-3B: 2-3, BB, HR (5) Kyle Blanks-1B: 2-3, 2 2b, 2 RBI, Run scored, K Vince Belnome-2B: 0-4, K Casey Kelly-SP: 2-2 Casey Kelly-SP: 6.0 IP, 2 hits, 2, BB, ER, 3 K’s, W (3-0) Brad Brach-RP 1.0 IP, 1 hit, BB, 2 K’s, Save (9)
Notes: Casey Kelly is in perhaps his best stretch of pitching since entering pro ball. He has allowed only 4 ER in his last three starts while walking only four batters. His two hits allowed was his best mark of the season. Kelly has also managed to whittle his opponents’ batting average down to .263, it has been at or above .300 for most of the season. The two constants for him this season have been remarkable efficiency and a groundball rate nearing 55%.
Lake Elsinore Storm Day Off
Fort Wayne Tin Caps 2, South Bend Silverhawks 7 Jose Dore-RF: 1-3, BB, K, Caught stealing Chris Tremblay-1B: 1-4, K Brian Guinn-SS: 0-3, 2 BB, K, Run scored Jake Blackwood-3B: 1-4, RBI Wes Cunningham-DH: 1-3, BB, RBI Tommy Medica-C: 0-3, BB, K Adys Portillo-SP: 4.0 IP, 5 hits, 3 BB, 5 runs allowed, 4 ER, 2 K’s Adam Dominick-RP: 1.0 IP, BB, K
Notes: Adys Portillo turned in another poor start and his ERA is now approaching 10. He has yet to complete the fifth inning in any start and has walked fewer than 3 only once. Most troubling has been Portillo’s inability to miss bats, he has 16 walks and 17 strikeouts in 18.2 innings pitched. Wes Cunningham has only 6 hits in his last 33 at bats, his thump has been sorely needed on a Tincaps offense that is struggling to score runs. Last year he hit .290 with 18 extra base hits at short-season Eugene and was one of their offensive leaders.
