tincapsAs May comes to a close, the Friarhood would like to look back at some of the highlights 2010’s first month of the San Diego Padres Low-A affiliate in Fort Wayne.

The Friarhood will select an outstanding position player and pitcher each month this season. So without further adieu, here are my selections for May beginning with hitter of the month.

Danny Payne

Tincaps hitter of the month: Danny Payne

The offensive player of the month for the Fort Wayne TinCaps is outfielder Danny Payne.  Since his demotion from Lake Elsinore early in the month, Payne played in 20 games for Fort Wayne, hitting .301 and stealing 8 bases.  He has assumed the leadoff role with the TinCaps and has sparked the offense.  His .413 OBP and occassional power allowed him to score 14 runs in May while hitting 4 doubles and 2 triples.  He'll have to keep up the great start as the TinCaps are stacked with good young talent in the outfield.

Nick Schumacher

Tin Caps pitcher of the month: Nick Schaumacher

The TinCaps pitcher of the month is closer Nick Schumacher.  Schumacher has a 1.62 ERA on the season to go along with 10 saves and a 2-2 record.  May was a particularly good month for Schumacher posting 8 saves with an ERA around 1.  Schumacher has proven to be a resilient pitcher as well earning saves on back to back nights on more than one occassion in May.

Nick Schumacher????? My pick would be either Jerry Sullivan or Nick Greenwood.
Actually, I would have picked Sullivan. He seemed to pick up the team with a win every time, they took a loss. I should say that Schumacher does give the Tincaps of bonified closer compared to the start of the season.
