Catcher Tommy Medica was drafted in the 14th round of the 2010 draft from Santa Clara University. He was highly regarded as a catching prospect prior to the 2009 season when he suffered a torn labrum in his shoulder and required surgery in April of that year. He had 92 starts his first two years at SC and was named to the 2007 USA National Team, also participating in the Pan Am games in Brazil. The scouting report prior to his injury spoke of an above average throwing arm from an above average athlete who can also play other positions (LF and 1B). Other than his arm, his defensive skills were rated as average but he has no overall weaknesses in his game. At the plate he has gap power and drives the ball well. He had a .386 avg with 67 RBI, 21 2B, 2 3B, 13 HR over his first 54 games with the SC Broncos. Despite his injury and slow return, he was considered one of the top 20 catching prospects during the 2010 draft evaluation period The player he has most often been compared to is Jason Kendall. Since the draft, Medica has worked on completing the rehab on his shoulder. He has not gotten back his full shoulder strength yet and is playing with the Fort Wayne Tin Caps as primarily a 1B and DH. During the 2010 season he played no defensive position but PH and DH’d for the Eugene Emeralds. Over 102 AB he scored 7 runs with 18 H, 4 2B, 9 RBI with 18 BB and 18 SO for a .176/.318/.216 line in his limited duty.. Watching him in spring training, he was getting work behind the plate and at 1B and his throwing motion looked good but his strength was not back to normal yet. If he is able to get his arm back, he will be in the mix as one of the Padres better catching prospects. If not, he has the athletic ability to play 1B or LF. Hopefully this will be a bounce back year for him at whatever position he is able to play. He remains committed to catching and is still working in that capacity. He remains a catcher on the Fort Wayne roster for this season. His current line for the Tin Caps: 19 games, 59 AB, 12 R, 21 H, 10 2B, HR, 10 RBI, 7 BB, 5 SO for a .356/.433/.576 line.
