On the Farm - Fort Wayne Tin Caps

Sharing is Caring

tincaps

1. Donavan Tate, CF (4)

Donovan is a ridiculous athlete. He has some of the best power potential in the system (though it is unlikely he will hit a lot of HR for Fort Wayne). He also has excellent range in CF and a strong throwing arm. He will likely be raw in his first full season of professional baseball. He suffered several injuries after signing with the Padres in 2009 and last year. 2011 will simply be, for Tate, about getting experience.

2. Adys Portillo, RHP (11)

Portillo was the prize signing for the Padres international free agent signings a few years ago. He is still young – he just turned 19 in Dec. 2010. He flashes great stuff: a fastball that touches 95, a solid change, good breaking stuff; he just needs to put it all together and be more consistent.

3. Keyvius Sampson, RHP (17)

Keyvius is another talented young hurler the Padres have in Fort Wayne; he just turned 20 in January. Last year, he led all Padres starting pitchers in strikeouts per 9 innings with a 12.14 K/9 rate. He isn’t the tallest pitcher, but he has the stuff to profile as a #2 starter.

4. Everett Williams, OF (19)

Everett was part of the same draft class that brought Tate and Sampson into the Padres organization. He, like Tate, is also an excellent athlete (though not quite as elite), also like Tate, he has struggled with making contact as a professional. Williams, with Tate and Dore, helps make up an extremely athletic outfield for the TinCaps.

5. Jose Dore, OF (25)

The third member of the TinCaps highly athletic outfield (all three played CF in high school), Dore signed late and played in only 4 games in 2010. Dore is also the biggest question-mark of the three. After a solid junior campaign, Dore was hurt and because of the injury, played below his ability as a senior. When healthy, Dore makes hard contact and drives the ball. As a young professional that will likely translate into more doubles than home runs.

6. Zach Cates, RHP (26)

Cates is somewhat new to pitching. He was a catcher and reliever as a JUCO freshman and began starting when his team’s starters were hurt. He blossomed in that role and was a starting pitcher as a JUCO sophomore. He grabbed scout’s attention by touching 97 with his fastball. He’s still somewhat raw but has an electric arm.
