Week 2 of the minor league season kicked off with a four game series against High Desert. This is the second four game series of the early season against the Mavericks, once again splitting the series. The standouts continue to be Drew Cumberland, Cody Decker and Dan Robertson on offense, with Cumberland making his first appearance at second base defensively. Decker also split time between first base and DH. Storm Closer Brad Brach continued his effective pitching, adding two more saves to his total (5/5). The starting pitchers struggled with the two games won by the relief pitching.
There were a total of nine errors made by the defense during the series. Three by RF D. Payne, two by catcher M. Collins and single errors by 3B V. Belnome, SS C. Figueroa and LF D. Robertson. The second series of the week, against the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes, consisted of three games. The Storm dropped the series 2 games to 1. The winner of game 3 was Erik Davis, who pitched a strong five innings ( 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 SO, 4.5 ERA ) The offensive production continued from D. Robertson and C. Decker. Shortstop was taken over by C. Figueroa, who had a good series, playing 2 out of 3 games (4/9, 2 R 3 RBI and two stolen bases. Robertson contributed with 2 SB of his own. At the end of this series Dan Robertson was announced as the Player of the Week for April 8- 18. His line .407/ .455/ .593 was third best in the Cal League-South. The numbers by Cody Decker (.333/.375/.517) and Drew Cumberland (.326/.383/.512) were also in the top 15 in the league. The Storm gave a break to Drew Cumberland, the regular shortstop, for the last two games of the series. He struggled defensively the first week of the season, making 5 errors. The pitcher who excelled during the first two weeks, Anthony Bass, had an ERA of 3.16 for his three starts. Closer Brad Brach finished with a 1.04 ERA, 8.2 IP and 5 saves. Reliever Aaron Breit (2-1) had an ERA of 3.27 for the first four series. Nick Vincent was also strong in relief (2.16 ERA, 5 IP) along with Zach Herr (ERA 2.16, 8 IP). Reliever Colt Hynes was promoted to AA, Closer Jackson Quezada came off the DL and Nick Schumacher was sent to low A Fort Wayne to close.
