Sharing is Caring

The first series of week 3 was another series against High Desert,  a four game series.  The game originally scheduled for 4/22 was rained out and a double header was played 4/25.  Storm lost the series 3 games to 1 and was generally weak at the plate, scoring a combined 8 runs for the series. They committed three errors over the four games, which is an improvement. Shortstop and second baseman Drew Cumberland sat out the series with sore ribs and had been inactive since the 19th.

Anthony Bass pitched well in the second game but did not get the win. That went to the closer, Brad Brach, who has had a strong season so far. He leads the team with eight saves and is the league leader in that category. The Storm leads the league overall with nine saves.  Jorge Reyes had an effective but short outing in the first game, pitching 4.2 innings, allowing 4 runs also striking out 4 and reducing his ERA to 4.70.

The hitters were obviously suppressed in the series with Dan Robertson and Cole Figueroa tying for the most hits for the series (4). There were a total of nine strikeouts in the first game of the series. The lone victory game from a walk off homer from back up catcher Robert Lara in game 2.

The second series of the week, against Inland Empire 66, was a three games series that the Storm swept. There was great starting pitching from Chris Fetter in the first game with 6 IP, 7 H but only 2 runs scored (1 ER). A triple by Robertson with doubles by Figueroa and Decker were responsible for the three runs scored. Reliever Zach Herr pitched 1.1 innings for the hold (ERA 1.86) and Brach earned his 6th save. Figueroa also added a stolen base. In the second game, Erik Davis also had a strong pitching performance but did not get the win. His 6 IP with 4 hits, 1 run and 7 strike outs (ERA 3.66) resulted in a 1-1 tie. The game was won in extra innings (11) by Nick Vincent on the strength of two singles (pinch runner Cumberland stole second and scored the first run) and a home run by catcher Collins. He allowed only one hit in his half of the inning with one strikout. Brad Brach picked up the save, his seventh. This was the first appearance in a game for Cumberland and Joe Agreste, replacing Blake Tekotte who is on the 7 day DL.

The final game of the series also highlighted a strong pitching performance. This time by Jorge Reyes who pitched five innings, giving up 6 hits but no runs and striking out six. Another save for Brach upped his total to eight. Figueroa and Cumberland added stolen bases.

The Storm is second in the Cal league with a 11/10 record. Third baseman Vince Belnome leads the team in HR’s -4 and RBI- 14 with a .237/.318/.447. Dan Roberston was cooled off a little in this series but still finished with a .387/.440/.560 and has 10 RBI. Figueroa leads the team with 10 walks and Cumberland with 9 stolen bases.
