Padres starting pitcher Chris Young made his third rehab start on Saturday Sept 11 for the Lake Elsinore Storm in their first playoff game of the post season. In 5.2 IP, Young allowed 3 hits (2 singles and a double) with 1 BB and punched out 7 while throwing 75 pitches. He showed great control of his fastball and curveball during the outing. It was typical Chris Young pitching with 7 groundouts compared to 3 fly outs with his 7 SO. His only slight struggle came in the second inning when he gave up a single followed by a walk but then retired the next hitter for the third out. The 6th inning started with a chuckle as Young sailed a curve ball over catcher Ali Solis’ head to bounce off the netting behind home plate. It appeared he lost his grip on the ball during his delivery. CY was removed after he allowed a double to RC DH, Luis Jimenez. His pitch count had reached the allotted 75 pitches at that point. In the stands for the game were various members of the Padres staff, including pitching coach Darren Balsley. Staff members could be seen charting pitches and holding a radar gun on Young’s pitches. There was no field radar gun used for the game. Storm pitcher Anthony Bass entered the game upon Young’s exit and pitched 3.1 innings with only 1 hit allowed and 3 strikeouts. He was dominant in his relief appearance. Storm hitters were the beneficiaries of 7 errors by the Mavericks. One particularly memorable event was OF Daniel Robertson scoring on his bunt single followed by two throwing errors. Cody Decker had a rare bad game, going 0 for 5 with 3 strikeouts. 3B Vince Belnome had the best night at the plate with a 2 for 4 with a walk and 2 RBI. The second game of the best of 5 series plays out Sunday Sept 12 at 5pm at the Diamond in Lake Elsinore. Playoff tickets are $7 each and Sunday is Storm T-shirt giveaway day.
