Tucson finished up their last home-stand in week #21 with two games against division champion Sacramento and six games with Reno. Tucson starting pitcher Jon Leicester pitched against Sacramento starter Josh Outman. SP Leicester threw just over six innings while allowing eight runs with three strikeouts. SP Outman struck out seven and allowed four runs (one earned) in five innings. The T-Pads scored eight runs after the fourth inning to make the game close and brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth in the form of left fielder Jarrett Hoffpauir who flied out to end the game. LF Hoffpauir was the man Tucson wanted at the plate as he had three hits, three runs and a run batted in during game three of the series. Catcher Luis Martinez had two hits and two RBI, first baseman Anthony Rizzo had a hit and an RBI, right fielder Bobby Kielty chipped in with two hits and an RBI, and shortstop Pat McKenna had a hit and two RBI in the 9-11 loss. The final game of the four-game series had SP Matt Buschmann throw against Sacramento SP Travis Banwart. SP Banwart kept Tucson’s bats quiet, allowing two runs (none earned) with four strikeouts in seven innings. SP Buschmann gave up six runs in five innings while striking out three. T-Pads designated hitter Kielty had three hits and a run scored on a night when offense was hard to come by for Tucson. The final score was 2-15 as the Oakland Athletics triple-A affiliate swept the four-game series with Tucson. The Reno Aces were in Tucson for six consecutive games starting Wednesday with T-Pads SP Jeremy Hefner facing off with Reno SP Barry Enright. SP Hefner gave Tucson the start that they needed when he threw six innings, allowing four runs (three earned) with two strikeouts. There were five homeruns in the game with three of hit off of Reno SP Enright, who had a tough night allowing eight runs in five innings while striking out six. 1B Rizzo had two hits including a solo homerun. Left fielder Matt Clark was four for four with a run scored and an RBI. C Martinez had two doubles and two RBI, third baseman Pedro Feliz hit a two-run homerun and second baseman Anthony Contreras hit a solo homerun. Relief pitchers Luis Perdomo and Brad Brach combined to allow one run (none earned) in their three innings of work. SP Hefner earned his ninth win and RP Brach earned his ninth save of the season in the 9-5 Tucson victory As a result of a rained out game between Reno and Tucson earlier this season, two seven-inning games were scheduled for Kino Stadiums’ last thirsty Thursday of the season; there were 4,004 in attendance The double-header saw some great pitching from both teams as six total runs were scored over both games. SP Mike Watt made his first triple-A start of the series for Tucson in game one. SP Watt pitched well, throwing five innings while allowing two runs on three strikeouts. RP Greg Burke threw two innings with two strikeouts in relief. The great start made by SP Watt was outdone by opposing SP Kevin Mulvey who only surrendered two hits while striking out four in his complete game shutout. 1B Rizzo and shortstop Steve Tolleson had the two hits for Tucson in the 0-2 loss. The seven inning game was completed in one hour and 30 minutes. Game two was similar to game one in the fact that offense was hard to come by. T-Pads SP Rob Musgrave allowed one run in five innings with five strikeouts. Left handed SP Tom Layne allowed two runs in five innings for Reno. 1B Rizzo had two doubles and scored two runs in game two. 3B James Darnell had an RBI in his first start since returning from San Diego. SS McKenna had two hits and an RBI and 2B Hoffpauir had two hits and a run scored in the game. SP Musgrave earned his first win of the year, RP Perdomo got his ninth hold and RP Brach got save number 10 in the 3-1 win. Game four of the series had a lot more offense than games two and three as SP Samuel Deduno faced off with Reno SP Zach Kroenke. SP Deduno struck out five in six innings while allowing four runs. SP Kroenke allowed six runs in five innings on four strikeouts. SS Tolleson had three hits, two runs scored and an RBI Friday. LF Darnell had a hit and two RBI, 2B Contreras had two hits including two runs scored and an RBI. SP Deduno received his fourth win, RP Burke got his seventh hold and RP Pat Neshek earned save number three in the 6-5 win. The double header on Thursday lasted a total of three hours and 17 minutes and the one game on Saturday lasted four hours and 37 minutes. In front of a crowd of 6,109 T-Pads SP Leicester threw six innings while striking out three and allowing just one run on two hits. SP Gaby Hernandez pitched seven innings while allowing two runs with six strikeouts for Reno. The two runs given up by SP Hernandez came on a two-run homerun by 1B Rizzo in the sixth inning. Center fielder Eric Patterson had three hits and a huge RBI in the lead-off spot. This game was tied 2-2 after nine innings, the score stayed that way until Reno pushed across a run in the 15th inning off of RP Poreda. 2B Contreras led off the bottom half of the 15th with a double and scored on a pinch-hit double by Hoffpauir. After a wild pitch by Reno RP Kam Mickolio, Hoffpauir moved over to third. CF Patterson then singled to center field allowing Hoffpauir to score the winning run. RP Poreda received his third win of the year in the 4-3 victory. The final game of the series saw SP Buschmann throw against Reno SP Wes Roemer. SP Buschmann threw over six innings while allowing four runs on two strikeouts. SP Roemer allowed five runs in six innings including two T-Pads homeruns. 1B Rizzo hit a solo homerun in the fourth inning and is now seventh in the Pacific Coast League with 26 homeruns. 1B Rizzo is fifth in the PCL with RBI 101, and third in the PCL with a .341 batting average. LF Clark is right behind Rizzo in homers as he hit homerun number 22 on the year in the sixth inning. LF Clark had three hits to go with his three RBI Sunday. RP Burke, Perdomo and Brach combined for just under three innings of relief without allowing any runs. SP Buschmann got his sixth win and RP Brach earned his 11th win in the 6-4 victory. Tucson won four games in a row and five out of six with the Arizona Diamond Backs triple-A affiliate. The T-Pads will finish the season on the road with thee games in Tacoma and one make-up game in Reno. The Tucson Padres overall season record stands at 62-74.
