Official press release provided by the San Antonio Missions media department:
San Antonio – The San Antonio Missions have been named the Minor League Team of the Year and Double-A Team of the Year by MiLB.com.
The Missions were an overwhelming choice for the award out of all 188 teams in Minor League baseball (full and short season) and the 30 clubs in Double-A.
The 2011 season was an historic one for San Antonio. They recorded the best record in all of the minors at 94-46 while winning both the first and second halves. Their 94 victories were the most in the league since the advent of the 140-game schedule in 1961 and were the second-most in franchise history, just one less than the 95 victories by the 1908 club.
The Missions registered 100 overall wins after going 6-1 in the post-season on their way to capturing the franchise’s 12th Texas League Championship.
San Antonio established or tied nine Texas League, team or individual records this year and had six players promoted to the San Diego Padres directly from San Antonio, while three other Missions were sent to Triple-A Tucson before earning their big league call-ups.
In addition, Doug Dascenzo was named the Texas League Manager of the Year and Missions President Burl Yarbrough was named the Texas League Executive of the Year.
San Antonio will begin the 2012 season with a six-game home stand starting on Thursday, April 5.

This was an amazing and championship season for the San Antonio Missions. There is much to be excited about with this group of players. Many of them started the season with San Antonio but finished it with the San Diego Padres and yet the team was still strong enough to win the championship in their league. That says a lot about the quality of talent moving up in the Padres system.
To start the season, the Missions had 3B/2B Logan Forsythe, 3B/LF James Darnell, Starter Anthony Bass. 1B/LF Kyle Blanks, CF Blake Tekotte and utility player Andy Parrino, all playing on a regular basis or starting. All of them played parts or a lot of the regular season for the Padres. They were replaced on the Missions and the team kept winning. They finished the year with a 94-46 record and a 15 game lead over the next closest team. They were 1st and 2nd half division winners and played 55-15 ball at home. They had the best record of any team in minor league baseball. That is an amazing accomplishment for a team that supplied so much support to the major league club.

One Team
One Mission
Those of you that have followed the website and the radio show this season know that I don't hide my love for the San Antonio Missions. The team practically split coverage with the Padres at time, but could you blame me? To be fair, I enjoy working with all of the minor league affiliated, but because of my relationships with these young guys on the team, I had a vested interest in this Missions team.
Just look at the names that are on the current Padres roster that spent time with the Missions this season, Kyle Blanks, Nick Hundley, Andy Parrino, James Darnell, Anthony Bass, Brad Brach, Josh Spence, and Erik Hamren. You can see it's no wonder why I spent the amount of time and energy that I did on this team. Couple that with manager Doug Dascenzo and a great front office and you start to understand why I love these guys. This may be a AA team, but they do some great things in terms of entertainment value, don't believe me? Check out this video they made for the playoffs...
