Press Release provided by the San Antonio Missions Media Department San Antonio – San Antonio manager Doug Dascenzo announced today that Mission Casey Kelly will be the starting pitcher for the South in Wednesday’s 75th Texas League All-Star Game at Wolff Stadium.
Kelly has posted a 6-4 record with a 4.48 ERA. In 16 starts, the right-hander has pitched 86.1 innings, allowed 99 hits, 53 runs (43 earned) while walking 27 and striking out 65.
He leads the staff in strikeouts and is tops in the Texas League in starts and is fourth in innings pitched.
The 21-year old native of Sarasota, FL was originally drafted in the first round (30th overall) pick in the 2008 First Year Player Draft by the Boston Red Sox. Kelly was obtained by San Diego along with three other players in exchange for Adrian Gonzalez on December 6, 2010.
Kelly, the top-rated prospect in the Padres minor league system, originally signed a letter of intent to play quarterback at the University of Tennessee before turning his attention to baseball fulltime.
