LAST TIME OUT: The Padres came up short in a 12-inning affair last night, falling 3-2 to the Phillies…Mat Latos made the start and earned a no-decision after working 7.0 innings of one-run ball, lowering his ERA on the season to 2.29…Yorvit Torrealba got the Padres on the board with fourth homer of the season in the third…the Padres rallied from behind 2-1 in the bottom of the ninth, drawing a balk from Phillies RHP Brad Lidge to score the tying run…Ernesto Frieri was tagged with his first career loss after allowing a run to score in the 12th.

ON THE HILL: Jon Garland takes the hill today…the 30-year-old veteran has gone 4-1 with a 2.01 ERA (7 ER/31.1 IP) and a .191 (21-for-110) opponents batting average in five starts this month…has also gone 7-2 with a 2.49 ERA (22 ER/79.2 IP) and a .210 (60-for-286) opponents average in 13 starts at home this season, with his ERA at home ranking seventh best in the NL.

ON TOP: The Padres find themselves atop the National League West standings with a 76-51 record that ranks as the best mark in the Senior Circuit…it is the fifth time in franchise history that the club has been in first place through games of 8/27 (1984, 1996, 1998, 2005)…with a 38-27 record away from home, San Diego is posting the best road record in the NL…at 38-24, the Padres are also posting a .613 winning percentage at home…the Padres are currently 25 games over .500…reached a season-high 27 games above .500 with Wednesday
