Yesterday, the Padres ownership was supposed to switch hands from John Moores to Jeff Moorad. Those plans hit a snag though during the owners' meeting at Paradise Vallex, AZ. The esitmated $530 million sale of the team was placed on hold due to many "economic issues" that Commissioner Bud Selig wanted more clarity on.
The delay of the sale did not rub Moores the right way. In a later vote for Selig's 2-year contract extension as commisioner, Moores stood alone as the only vote against it. The final vote for the contract extension was 29-1.
This delay should not be a big hurdle for the sale of the team. After Moorad answers some "technical questions", then the sale can be put up to a vote for the owners. He would need 75 percent support from the other 29 owners to finalize the sale.
The delay of the sale should not hinder anything with the TV deal that the Padres are trying to put together with Fox Sports. That deal should be done by the start of the season.
