With the first pick the Padres have selected Cory Spangenberg.  You can listen to Cory on Friarhood Radio here

The player profile below is via Cheri Bell

Cory Spangenberg   3B   Indian River St (FL)  L/R  6- 0  184lbs   20 yr old

A late bloomer physically, he has above average speed and may not stay in the infield but possibly projects better as an OF. He is an above average hitter with good bat control and developing power. Corner outfield would be the most likely position for him with only an average throwing arm.

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The San Diego Padres today selected infielder Cory Spangenberg out of Indian River State College in Fort Piece, Fla. with the 10th overall pick on the first day of Major League Baseball’s First-Year Player Draft. Vice President/Assistant General Manager Jason McLeod made the announcement.

Spangenberg, 20, is a Pennsylvania prep product who spent one year at Virginia Military Institute before transferring to Indian River State College after winning Big South Conference Freshman of the Year honors. The left-handed-hitting infielder played third base at Indian River in 2011, but has seen time at both second base and shortstop since moving to the collegiate level. In high school, Spangenberg led Abington Heights to the PIAA State Championship, hitting .479 with a 1.000 slugging percentage his senior year.

Recommended by Padres amateur scout Willie Bosque, Spangenberg was named the 2011 Florida College System Activities Association Male Athlete of the Year by the FCSAA. The Clarks Summit, Penn. native hit .477 this year for Indian River, the sixth-best average in the nation among Division I junior colleges. He was ranked by Baseball America as the third-best pure hitter and the fastest runner among all college players in the 2011 Draft class, as well as the second-best third basemen.

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The San Diego Padres today selected five players on the first day of Major League Baseball’s First-Year Player Draft.  The 50-round draft continues tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. PT with rounds 2-30 and concludes on Wednesday with rounds 31-50.

In the first round, the Padres selected infielder Cory Spangenberg (SPAN-jen-berg) at 10th overall and right-handed pitcher Joe Ross with the 25th overall pick.  Ross, 18, compiled a 0.83 ERA with 95 strikeouts in 67.2 innings pitched for Bishop O’Dowd during his senior campaign.  Recommended by Padres amateur scout Noah Jackson, he is the younger brother of current Oakland Athletics right-handed pitcher Tyson Ross.

In the compensation round the Padres made three selections.  With the 48th overall pick in compensation for right-handed pitcher Jon Garland, the Padres selected right-handed pitcher Michael Kelly out of West Boca Community High School (FL).  Recommended by Padres amateur scout Willie Bosque, the 18-year-old played in the 2010 Aflac All-American Baseball Classic at PETCO Park.

At 54th overall, in compensation for catcher Yorvit Torrealba, San Diego selected catcher Brett Austin, 18, out of Providence Senior High School (NC).  Recommended by Padres amateur scout Adam Bourassa, the switch-hitter was ranked by Baseball America as the fourth-best catcher in the 2011 draft class.

With their final pick in the first day of the draft, the Padres selected infielder Jace Peterson, 21, out of McNeese State University at 58th overall in compensation for right-handed pitcher Kevin Correia. Recommended by Padres amateur scout Kevin Ellis, the left-handed hitting infielder hit .335 (75-for-224) with 67 runs scored for the Cowboys this season.
