MLB Draft - MLB Draft

Sharing is Caring

Here is the first installment of Peter Friberg’s Draft Big Board. I scour the consensus national ranking experts: Baseball America and ESPN’s Keith Law, as well as some of the blogs, but I always make my own opinions (i.e. George Springer is touted as potential 30-30 guy but I’ve yet to buy into him and my ranking is demonstrably lower than you’ll see elsewhere)…

Rank First Last Pos. School Comments
Anthony Rendon 3B Rice Closest thing to Pujols college baseball has seen. Legitimate glove/bat for 3B, slightly undersized at 5'11" & has questions from ankle injuries
Bubba Starling CF Gardener-Edgerton HS (KS) two-way HS talent: 5-tool CF, & LHP sits @ 90+, also elite QB recruit - ridiculus athlete (D1 caliber basketball player as well)
Gerrit Cole RHP UCLA Was top HS arm in '08. Dominated in col., ideal frame, has stuff and results to exite scouts and statheads
Sonny Gray RHP Vanderbilt Most have him ranked lower due to sub-6' stature but has stuff to deserve top-5 ranking
Francisco Lindor SS Monteverde HS (FL) Elite SS with glove to stay at SS and bat to deserve elite draft status
Matt Purke RHP TCU
Draft-eligible soph., was a 1st rnd pick by Texas 2 years ago… He pitches in the 90's and can touch 95-96. Most regard him as a consensus top 5 pick. I like him, but I like others more
Archie Bradley RHP Broken Arrow HS (OK) Arguably the top HS pitcher in draft, touches 95 - QB commitment to OU
Danny Hultzen LHP U Virgina Solid stuff (high 80's FB thru most of last year, recently sitting 90-92) but has makeup questions… Having ridiculus beginning to Jr. season
Daniel Norris LHP Science Hill HS (TN) Best HS LHP in draft, comparared to Drew Pomaranz from '10 draft
Jackie Bradley, Jr. CF So. Carolina Not much power, but has everything else, physically he's a Milton Bradley-lookalike
Trevor Bauer RHP UCLA Solid stuff with elite results… Liked more by statheads than scouts. He'll be a 1st round draft pick - could get popped anywhere between 5 & 30
Jedd Bradley LHP GaTech 6'4" LHP who touches 97 and has a plus change
Taylor Jungmann RHP U Texas As good of stuff as any other col RHP, but injury concerns knock ranking (across-body delivery & pitches for abuse-prone UT)
Matt Barnes LHP Uconn Credited as one of best college RHP in draft, but hasn't had results like others
Jason Esposito 3B Vanderbilt Many predicted he would be 1st pick overall when he did not sign out of HS. Plus defense at 3B, could move to 2B, and has even imprssed at SS - power bat, good athleticism - if JE can play SS he's likely a top 10 pick
Dylan Bundey RHP Owasso (OK) Has enough height not to scare folks (6'1") and flashes 95s & 3 other pitches - possibly the 2nd best HS RHP in the draft but SERIOUS red flags from being overworked (293 pitches in 4 days) as a junior
George Springer CF Uconn Many call him a potential 30-30 guy and most have GS as a top 5 pick, elite physicality (power & speed) may have to move to COF, delaying higher ranking to see performance w/ new bats
Tyler Beede RHP Lawrence Acadamy (MA) Decent velo, but "exciting" off-speed, command, and feel according to ESPN's K. Law
Dillon Howard RHP Searcy HS (AR) Like Bundey, could be a top (or nearly that) in other years. Touches 95, hard curve
Blake Swihart C Cleveland HS (NM) Switch-hitting C w/ power & glove
Henry Owens LHP Edison HS (CA) 6'5" LHP with ideal frame and big league velo
Jose Fernandez RHP Alonso HS (FL) Cuban pitcher touches 97 w/ hard curve
Brandon Nimmo OF East HS (WY) Serious bat, hard to eval (WY doesn't have HS baseball), COF or 1B - will prob grow out of current running ability, potential top-20 pick
Levi Michael SS/2B UNC shortish (5'10") switch-hit MI prospect may be able to stay at SS and would still be above-average offensively at 2B - legit 1st rounder if he can stay @ SS
