Harang went 6-7 with a 5.32 ERA, 82K's, 38 walks, with a 1.59 WHIP in 20 starts in only 111 2/3 innings. Harang is a fly ball pitcher who would fare well coming out of the hitters’ paradise (the NL Central Division). Harang will attempt to regain his value and front of the rotation potential as the San Diego native returns home to pitch in the extreme pitching-friendly confines of Petco Park.
Harang had his best season in 2007, going 16-6 with a very impressive 3.73 ERA and a massive work load of 231.2 innings pitched. Since that stellar campaign, Harang has had a difficult time accumulating a similar workload. Harang has reduced his strike out to walk ratio, however Harang still missed enough bats and has very solid stuff that should translate very well in Petco Park.
Harang struggled in 2008 (partly due to a forearm strain) going 6-17, leading the NL in losses (on a horrible team) and posting pedestrian numbers across the board. Still, he posted a somewhat respectable 4.78 ERA, especially when considering the division and the hitters’ ballpark haven Harang pitched in.
Harang did have some positive signs in 2009, rebounding to a 4.21 ERA, and while his inning total was still down (mainly due to a season-ending appendectomy on 8/21/2009) and his overall numbers did not dramatically improve, he did allow 11 fewer homers and racked up a better strikeout ratio. Last year he missed considerable time due to nagging injuries throughout the season.
All things considered, there isn't a better place to try to regain your value than pitching for your hometown and in one of the most (if not the most) extreme pitcher-friendly ballparks in all of baseball. The Padres would still like to add an innings eater, such as a Kevin Millwood type, to solidify a rotation of newly acquired Aaron Harang, Mat Latos, Clayton Richard, and Tim Stauffer while Corey Luebke and Simon Castro are waiting in the wings.
