Traded:
- Adrian Gonzalez – Boston Red Sox The most notable name gone from the team is All Star first baseman Adrian Gonzalez. Gonzalez was traded to the Boston Red Sox during the off-season for three top prospects (Casey Kelly, Anthony Rizzo, and Reymond Fuentes). - Replaced by: Brad Hawpe, Jorge Cantu, and Kyle Blanks
- Ryan Webb and Edwin Mujica – Florida Marlins Padres’ General Manager Jed Hoyer kicked off the off-season with a bang, trading a surplus of arms in the bullpen for a 23 year-old with tons of upside to roam center field. I’ll be honest; it’s a little risky— Cameron Maybin is on his third team now in four years and even though he’s been a top prospect and he’s only 23, this trade could go either way for the Padres. - Replaced by: Chad Qualls and Ernesto Frieri
- Adam Russell and Cesar Ramos – Tampa Bay Rays The trade that almost happened, then didn’t happen, and then finally happened. Russell and Ramos were two major league arms in a six-player trade with the Rays that netted the Padres starting shortstop Jason Bartlett.
Free Agents:
- Jon Garland – Los Angeles Dodgers Garland’s career was resurrected last season by pitching in Petco, dropping an ERA of over four down to 3.47 with the Padres last season. Garland declined his option with the Padres and bolted for LA, he has good career numbers pitching in Dodgers stadium, but without Petco and the stellar Padres’ defense behind him, Garland should return to a 4+ ERA. o Signed by LA Dodgers as a free agent 11/26/10 o 1 year/$5M (2011), plus 2012 club option o 11: $5M, 12: $8M club option (guaranteed with 190 IP in 2011) o 2011 performance bonuses up to $3M based on IP - Replaced by: Aaron Harang - Compensation pick awarded to the Padres
- Tony Gwynn Jr. – Los Angeles Dodgers A fan favorite for obvious reasons, the Padres decided to choose winning over PR and split ways with Tony Gwynn Jr. Gwynn was able to play Gold Glove defense the first half of the season, but his bat was a major liability for a team starved for runs. o 1 year/$0.675M (2011) - Replaced by: Cameron Maybin
- Miguel Tejada – San Francisco Giants Tejada was one of the best hitters on the Padres down the stretch and quickly became a fan favorite with his “spotlight” after getting on base. The Padres elected not to offer Tejada arbitration and he signed with the Giants as a free agent. o 1 year/$6.5M (2011) o Signed by San Francisco as a free agent 11/30/10 o Performance bonuses - Replaced by: Jason Bartlett
- Yorvit Torrealba – Texas Rangers After waiting, and waiting, and waiting, Torrealba settled for a discounted payday from the Padres. He then put together an amazing first half of the season before running out of gas at the end of July. Yorvit decided to decline his option with the Padres and cashed in with the Rangers. o 2 years/$6.25M (2011-12) o Signed by Texas as a free agent 11/29/10 o 11: $3M, 12: $3.25M - Replaced by: Nick Hundley - Padres awarded compensation pick
- Kevin Correia – Pittsburgh Pirates After a rough season on and off the field, Correia elected for a change of scenery signing with the Bucs. The Pirates were fairly aggressive this off-season and most would say they overpaid for the free agents brought in, including Correia. o 2 years/$8M (2011-12) o Signed by Pittsburgh as a free agent 12/8/10 o $2M signing bonus o 11: $3M, 12: $3M - Padres awarded compensation pick
- Chris Young – New York Mets The Mets were willing to give CY the incentive-laden deal the Padres wouldn’t. Young should benefit from Petco East, aka Citi Field. The question is not as much Young’s results as it is his ability to stay healthy. o 1 year/$1.1M (2011) o Signed by NY Mets as a free agent 1/19/11 o $3.4M in performance bonuses based on starts, IP
- Scott Hairston – New York Mets Hairston dealt with injuries all season and was not able to put it together in San Diego. The Padres declined to offer him arbitration and Scotty will now have an opportunity to make the 25-man roster in New York. o 1 year/$1.1M (2011) o Signed by NY Mets as a free agent 1/21/11 o $0.4M in performance bonuses
- Jerry Hairston Jr. – Washington Nationals Super utility man Hairston gave the Padres all he had in 2010, but in the end Jed opted for Hudson and Bartlett up the middle and the Nationals offered more opportunity in 2011. o 1 year/$2M (2011) o Signed by Washington as a free agent 1/19/11 o $1M in performance bonuses
- Matt Stairs – Washington Nationals Stairs had his moments in 2011; however, it’s hard for any National League team to eat up a spot on the roster for a guy that only hits. o Signed to minor league contract
- David Eckstein – TBD A fan favorite but has yet to find a team in need of his services. He should be able to join a team as a role player/bat off the bench as Spring Training approaches.
