2010 Off Season - 2010 Off Season

Sharing is Caring

With the Padres struggling to score runs, the offense will be a topic of conversation all year.  When Jed Hoyer made the trade for Jason Bartlett in the offseason most assumed he would hit lead off for the Padres.  Although Black stated to Dan Hayes from the North County Times that Venable is going to get a long look, it really will come down to consistent production.  A quick look at Bartlett's numbers may give you an idea why Black is a bit apprehensive about just handing over the leadoff role to the new shortstop.

Batting 1st 672 86 159 14 3 10 63 27 11 61 111 .237 .306 .311 .617

Stop the presses!  For all the struggles that Will Venable has in 2010, he was outstanding in the lead off spot.
Will Venable's 2010 Leadoff Production
Split G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI SB CS BB SO BA OBP SLG OPS
Batting 1st 29 117 18 35 4 2 1 10 7 4 8 30 .299 .341 .393 .734

If you look at Bartlett, he is more successful at the bottom of the order, not the top.  The only exception is the freakish 2009 season he had.  If Will is able to cut down his strikeouts, then I am all for watching Big Willie Style kick off games in 2011.
