PEORIA, Ariz. – The San Diego Padres today announced that they have released infielder Kevin Frandsen and reassigned five players to minor league camp. Executive Vice President/General Manager Jed Hoyer made the announcements.
Reassigned today were right-handed pitchers Greg Burke, Scott Munter and Luis Perdomo, catcher Kyle Phillips and infielder Jesus Guzman.
In 20 Spring Training games, the 28-year-old Frandsen hit .216 (8-for-37) with three doubles, one home run, eight RBI, two runs scored and three stolen bases. He was signed as minor league free agent on January 7, 2011 with an invitation to Major League Spring Training. Over parts of five Major League campaigns with the San Francisco Giants (2006-09) and Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (2010), Frandsen has batted .243 (138-for-568) with 29 doubles, one triple, seven home runs, 53 RBI, 65 runs and 36 walks in 568 games played.
Burke, 28, has one save and a 5.63 ERA (5 ER/8.0 IP) with eight hits allowed and 11 strikeouts against one walk in eight Spring appearances. He has been an invitee to Major League Spring Training with the Padres for three consecutive seasons.
Munter, 31, is 1-0 with a 4.50 ERA (3 ER/6.0 IP) with seven hits allowed and nine strikeouts against three walks in six Spring Training appearances. He pitched all of last season with Triple-A Portland after being signed by San Diego as a minor league free agent on January 29, 2010.
Perdomo, 26, has been in the Padres’ organization since 2009, when he was claimed off waivers from the San Francisco Giants. He has no earned runs in eight appearances this Spring (8.1 IP). Perdomo is 1-0 while allowing six hits and two runs with three walks and eight strikeouts over that span.
Phillips, who will turn 27 on April 3, is 8-for-26 (.308) this Spring with two doubles and four RBI in 18 games. He played part of the 2010 season at Triple-A Portland after being acquired from the Toronto Blue Jays on June 25.
