As I reported this morning via twitter, the Padres have called up Josh Spence from AA - San Antonio. Spence was drafted in the 9th round of the 2010 draft, yes just over a year ago.
A lefty starter for Arizona State, this time last year Spence was playing in the college world series. After signing with the Padres, Spence spent the remainder of 2010 playing for Peoria, Eugene, and Fort Wayne. In ten games (five starts) Spence threw 24 innings, allowing eight earned runs on 19 hits while striking out 31 and allowing only six walks.
Skipping over High - A Lake Elsinore, Spence started the season with the AA San Antonio Missions and has been spectacular. Throwing 47 1/3 innings, allowing nine earned runs on 29 hits, while striking out 42 and walking 11. Spence is a soft tosser, but has great location and one of the best pick offs moves in the minors.
Recently Missions manager Doug Dascenzo was a guest on Friarhood Radio and he spoke about Spence. You can listen to the interview by clicking here.
