Sharing is Caring

Houston_Street_PadresIt is being reported from multiple sources that the Padres have acquired Colorado Rockies closer Huston Street for a player to be named later. The Padres will be the third major league team for the 28 year old from Austin, Texas.  While Street posted a 3.86 ERA in 2011, his ERA outside of Coors field was a 2.19 in 29.1 innings, while posting a 25/4 (K/BB) ratio.   Street is in the last year of a three year deal and is due $7.5 million, and has a $9 million player option for 2012 which may be bought out for 500K.

Although Moorad has been outspoken about incentive laden contracts, Street has the opportunity to earn some extra cash with the Padres this season.  award bonuses: $0.1M each for MVP, WS MVP; $0.1M for Rolaids ($50,000 for 2nd-5th); $0.1M for Cy Young ($50,000 for 2nd-5th); $75,000 for LCS MVP; $25,000 each for All Star, Gold Glove.

I like Street as a player, but I'm not thrilled with the move. Considering the Padres are only giving up a PTBNL, Street is practically a free agent signing (one year rental).

With a limited budget, I'm not sure why they felt such a strong need to splurge on a closer, when everyone knows they need to score runs.

I just wish they cared less about getting a closer and more about getting run producers.

I agree that the team needs to focus on offense. I never understood the incessant need for a closer. That being said, he is making what Heath Bell made last season. Therefore, we are essentially paying for another year of a closer and we got two draft picks on top of it. Now we need to take what money is left and sign a couple more players and make some trades for offensive upgrades so that we can use Street to his full potential

I am a little perplexed they committed $7.5 million to the closer position after declining to even speak with Bell. There were other, cheaper options that may not have been of the quality of Street but would have filled the role. As Brandon has mentioned, a guy like Aardsma, if healthy, would have been a good low risk guy. The only way this works out is if Street is pitching well in July and he can be flipped for a good prospect or two at the deadline. Not too thrilled with this move.

As an aside, I saw the incentives but I don't think he'll earn any of those except perhaps the Rolaids relief bonus and that's just $100,000 if he places first and $50,000 for second through fifth. Not that much money there.
