Pitchers and Catchers report Sunday, which can only mean one thing… I’m freaking out! By freaking out I mean, I’m excited that baseball is finally here. In just a few weeks many fans will be heading out to Peoria to enjoy professional baseball live. Our Friarhood trip is scheduled for March 23-25th. We have been working hard at Friarhood to continue bringing you (in our biased opinion) great Padres coverage, with a fan twist.
If you have not checked out the Friarhood Shop in a while, we have some new additions, including mens shirts in Gold, Blue, and for the ladies a ¾ sleeve top. I invite you the “Join the Congregation” and if you use the code “president” this weekend you will receive 30% OFF all Friarhood gear. All shirts are screen printed locally in Poway at Breakout printing. After working with companies that laser print on shirts online, we decided the only way to ensure a high quality product and prompt delivery was to go local and screen print. Breakout has been the Friarhood shirt provider for the last two years and they do an exceptional job.
Friarhood Events are lined up and I’m being told the Friarhood code should be active on Padres.com/promo next week. The Padres are working hard to get this lined up, so please be patient, the code will be up soon enough. You will be able to purchase tickets to join us for Opening Day and for our other games, the code (friarhood) will give you a discount of 35%.
Friarhood Radio is in full swing on XTRA Sports 1360. Be sure to join myself and Judson Richards every Saturday morning at 10am. If you missed the last show from FanFest, you can listen to the podcast here
We are in the process of updating the Friarhood iPhone app, but you can download it here as well as our beta app for droid.
Fantasy Baseball players, I will be creating leagues in the next week for you to join. Be on the lookout for information posted on our facebook page and on twitter.
Thank you for all of your continued support and GO PADRES!

The shortstop position is the least deep in the Padres organization. Of the players drafted for the position, most have not been able to stick and some of them have been moved to other spots. There is currently a very short list of legitimate shortstops with only two appearing to have a real shot to be adequate major league performers. It is possible that one or two others could surprise us but it is not likely.
At the major league level we are currently assuming that Jason Bartlett will be the 2012 shortstop, baring a late development or very unlikely surge by someone else during spring. If you look back at Bartlett’s history you will find an adequate line with one exceptional season. In 2009 Bartlett carried a .320/.389/.490 line that translated into an All-Star year and a +5.5 WAR. In 2010, the year before being acquired by the Padres, he reverted back to a career average .254/.324/.350 and a +1.2 WAR. An acceptable set of stats for an everyday shortstop but when faced with the challenge of Petco Park, Bartlett played to a .245/.308/.307 line last season and his first half defense was nothing to write home about. He did improve his defense in the second half and there is some hope that a second full season in the spacious confines of Petco will show that he is able to adjust his style of play to his environment. He is contracted through this season with an automatic option for next season based on plate appearances.
Bartlett is a quiet guy and he, as opposed to Ryan Ludwick, made no complaints about the Park or any excuses using the new league. Bill James has posted a projected .266/.333/.353 for Bartlett for 2012, reflecting that he believes that more adjustment time to the National League and Petco will result in better numbers for Jason. We all hope that is true as this list will illustrate how bare the cupboard is as far as depth is concerned for the organization.

In an article written by Bob Nightengale of USA today, the Padres may cash in big with the new TV deal.
"And even the San Diego Padres— playing in the 26th largest market in baseball — are, pending MLB approval, poised to sign a new deal with Fox Sports that will guarantee them $75 million a year for the next 20 years. The deal was confirmed by two industry executives familiar with the contract but not authorized to speak publicly about its details." Full story here
A far cry from the $17-20 million that has been thrown around over the last couple months and much more than the $13 million deal with Cox. What does this mean for Padres fans? In the immediate future... nothing. One would assume it would give the team plenty of money to retain talent and bring in an impact free agent, as opposed to older vets playing out their last days.

Multiple sources are reporting The San Diego Padres will sign veteran right hander Jeff Suppan to a minor league contract and invite him out to Spring Training. He will add some depth to the pitching staff in the Spring and log in some good innings. Suppan will be entering his 17th season in the league and he made his major league debut in 1995 with the Boston Red Sox.
He has a career 138-143 record with a 4.69 ERA. In his last season in the majors, 2010, he pitched for the St Louis Cardinals and went 3-6 with a 3.84 ERA in 13 starts. He spent all of last season with the Kansas City Royals AAA team in Omaha and never got the call up to the major league team.

The San Diego Padres added a starting pitcher to big league camp by signing Micah Owings to a minor league deal today according to Dan Hayes. Owings holds a 32-31 career record with a 4.91 ERA in 5 seasons with the Reds and D-Backs. Last season, he was 8-0 with a 3.57 ERAwith the D-Backs, starting 4 games for them.
This Spring, he will be comepting for a spot in the rotation or to be a long reliever out of the pen. If he makes it onto the big league roster, he will definitely benefit from PETCO's huge dimensions.
If he is not able to contibute on the mound, we could still use his bat off the bench. He is one of the best hitting pitchers in the league with 9 career home runs and 35 RBI and a .286 batting average.
It is now being reported by Ken Rosenthal that Owings signed a one year "major league" deal for one million dollars.
Who do you think will have more home runs this year? Mark Kotsay or Micah Owings? Who would you rather use if we needed a big pinch hit late in the game?
