The San Diego Padres added a starting pitcher to big league camp by signing Micah Owings to a minor league deal today according to Dan Hayes. Owings holds a 32-31 career record with a 4.91 ERA in 5 seasons with the Reds and D-Backs. Last season, he was 8-0 with a 3.57 ERAwith the D-Backs, starting 4 games for them. This Spring, he will be comepting for a spot in the rotation or to be a long reliever out of the pen. If he makes it onto the big league roster, he will definitely benefit from PETCO's huge dimensions. If he is not able to contibute on the mound, we could still use his bat off the bench. He is one of the best hitting pitchers in the league with 9 career home runs and 35 RBI and a .286 batting average. It is now being reported by Ken Rosenthal that Owings signed a one year "major league" deal for one million dollars. Who do you think will have more home runs this year? Mark Kotsay or Micah Owings? Who would you rather use if we needed a big pinch hit late in the game?
