Wily Mo PenaThe Padres sign former big leaguer Wily Mo Pena to a minor league deal. The Padres will assign the former big league masher to Triple A Portland, according to Dan Hayes of the North County Times has (via Twitter) @NCTPadres.

Pena, 28, has (reportedly) been playing for the Bridgeport Bluefish of the Atlantic League.

Wily Mo Pena Left Field/Right Height: 6-3

Weight: 268

The Baseball Cube scouting report:

Power: 82 Batting: 38 Speed: 38 Contact: 5 Patience: 25

Assets: Has great size, surprising mobility and versatility in the outfield. Thrives with runners in scoring position. Displays tremendous power when he makes contact.

Flaws Swings at everything, particularly against right handed pitching. Wily Mo Pena can rack up the K's and His defense is below Avg. at best, having defensive lapses on occasion.

He has the potential to be A solid run producer if given consistent playing time but with his below Avg. defense and his inability to make consistent contact he is probably more suited to be in a utility role or platoon situation, much like Scott Hairston.

Over all career line: .253 .307 .447 .753

Career line Vs. LHP .277 .339 .457 .796

Career line Vs. RHP .240 .289 .441 .730

Wily Mo's best year was in 2004 when he hit 26 HR with Cincinnati in a similar role to Scott Hairston has had, not exactly playing full time. Whether it was because of injuries or inconsistent AB's Wily Mo was never able to rack up an entire season; however,  he has definitely shown his tremendous home-run-power. His last fairly successful stint was in 07' between Boston and the Washington Nationals where he hit 13 HR's combined for both leagues while coming on strong with the Nats' posting an impressive line to finish the 07 season, .293 .352 .504 .856. Since then, Wily Mo has not had a steady gig at the big league level and last year played in the Mets system, AAA Buffalo hitting 5 HR's in 145 AB's .276 .296 .414 .710.

There is no doubt that Wily Mo has light-tower power, when he connects its WAY gone, he has just about as much raw power than anyone in Baseball. The problem is, Wily has had health problems and has never really been able to make consistent contact. Wily Mo Pena will provide some depth at AAA Portland and could be a possible call up if baring any injuries on the big league level.
