The Padres have acquired Miguel Tejada "if the league approves of the deal," according to MLB.com's Corey Brock (on Twitter) for Padres pitching prospect Wayne Pelzer (according to Dan Hayes of the NCT) as well as salary relief according to @danconnollysun (on twitter). 

"Baseball America ranked Pelzer seventh among all Padres prospects before the season. The 24-year-old is a power pitcher whose fastball sits in the mid-90s. As a starter, he has a 4.20 ERA with 7.9 K/9 and 5.3 BB/9 in AA this year, but BA said he could become a closer in time."

This year Tejada is sporting a -7 UZR/150 at third base. 

Scouting report: Is an excellent contact hitter that can spray the ball with the ability and rack up extra base hits and is a proven run producer.  He's a doubles machine with solid power in his bat. Is very durable and consistent. He can pull the ball with solid authority.

At this point in his career, his bat and speed on the base-paths has slowed considerably; however, Tejada can still be a game changer with one swing of the bat.  Has never been great defensively (at any position) and makes a lot of defensive miscues. Third-base (at this point in his career) is more ideal in contrast to shortstop but is still a viable option at SS., especially for a team that is one of the worst in all of Baseball in run production. The Padres also feel Tejeda can play SOME outfield, I would guess LF on occasion.

In 2009 with the Astros was the last year he played SS and Tejada sported a - 11.2 UZR/150. However, batted .313 with 86 RBI with 199 hits. Some people question Tejada going from two very hitters friendly parks (Houston and Baltimore) to Petco. and what that will mean for his over all numbers, which I think is a very valid question. Having said that, the guy can still hit and be a game changer with one swing of the bat and can thrive in pressure situations. I do not think Tejada is the "big bat" however, with there not being one "big bat" on the market due to injuries or asking prices that would likely deplete the farm systems progress (giving the asking price by many teams) I believe that he can provide some insurance at 3rd, SS and possibly LF and even 1st base.

The Padres parted with a decent prospect in Wynn Pelzer, a RHP drafted (9th round) in 07. Pelzer sits between 93-95 MPH and has touched 97. There had been some question of Pelzer's consistency moving forward, falling out of rhythm with his delivery (at times) and has a hard time with his body catching up to the quickness of his delivery. Many scouts see Pelzner as a relief guy as opposed to a starter. The Padres did give up a decent chip; but Pelzer was more than expendable because of the Padres pitching depth.

The Padres did not part with three of the better pitching prospects that are also ranked highly by the most respected scouting handbook, Baseball America. Simon Castro,(Castro mid season update draft report -17th over all) Cory Luebke (has been speculated that Cory could join the Padres big league team this year) or Keyvius Sampson, a very intriguing prospect with high upside. 

With Everth Cabrera's struggles (along with an aging Eckstein's health questions) and injury problems that have hindered the promising young SS that essentially was jumping from low A ball last year to the Majors, might have been a little much on the youngster. While "Cabby" has looked over matched this year, he still has great assets and I do not think he is going anywhere (or the Padres will give up on him) but I do believe it was smart for the Padres to look to add experience at shortstop as oppose to the outfield, where the Padres  feel like they are finally getting some reasonable production from and the fact that it takes two sides to make a deal. There are not many teams that seemed to be a very good match (trade wise) with the Padres that would have been a head and shoulders upgrade that were not asking for the moon.

Geoff Young from Ducksnorts: Tejada is a name, but he probably doesn't have much left to offer on the field. That said, he didn't cost much, so there is little downside.
