The Padres sign Jody Gerut to a minor league deal, according to Tom Krasovic of AOL FanHouse (on Twitter). Gerut, ironically was traded last year to the Brewers to acquire the current everyday center fielder for the Padres now injured, (likely for the year suffering a broken bone) Tony Gwynn Jr. Last year before being traded Gerut batted .221 with 4 HR then .236 with 5 HR's with the "Brew Crew" in split time to finish a disappointing 2009 season. Gerut logging most of his time in center-field with the Padres in 08-09. Jody had a come back player type year with the Padres in 2008, playing mostly in center field and some in right field, hitting  .296/ .351/.494/ .845  while slugging 14 HR's and driving in 43 in only 100 games with 328 Ab's. This year has been a very disappointing year for Gerut, hitting only .197 with 2 HR's in only 71 Ab's not getting full playing time in Milwaukee. The Padres with the loss of Gwynn more than likely add Gerut for more veteran depth to an already deep outfield. The Brewers released Gerut earlier this month. Jody Gerut has not played in a major league game since May 22.

The Baseball Cube:

Scouting Report Power: 59 Batting: 60 Speed: 71 Contact: 80 Patience: 58

SB-NATION Scouting report:

Assets: Hits well against right handed pitching and is a pretty good at hitting breaking pitches. Can play all three outfield positions.

Flaws: Has some trouble with runners in scoring position and even more difficulty hitting against southpaws. Doesn't always take advantage of his speed.

Career potential: Back up outfielder.
