Cameron Maybin #24 - CF Florida

Age: 23 DOB: 1987/04/04 POB: Asheville, NC Height: 6-3 Weight: 210lbs Bats/Throws: R/R

Drafted by Detroit in 2005 (1st round)

The Padres acquire Cameron Maybin from the Marlins in exchange for Padres relievers Ryan Webb and Edward Mujica.

The Padres lost two solid arms in Webb (a possible future set-up man or potential closer), and Edward Mujica. A very solid deal for a 5-tool outfielder with loads of potential that is still only going to be 24 in April. Both Mujica and Webb struggled at home, despite their overall success.  Here are some telling Home/Road ERA Splits: Ryan Webb 0.97/4.97, Edward Mujica 2.61/4.83. Webb was 3-1 in 54 games with a 2.90 ERA with 44 K's played a pivotal role down the stretch for the Padres in September pitching fantastically. Mujica went 2-1 with a 3.62 ERA along with 72K's in 69.2 innings pitched. However, Mujica had the tendency to give up the long ball, 14 big flies as a middle reliever is not ideal for someone who pitches in the most extreme pitching friendly confines of Petco park.

Cameron Maybin, only 23, has yet to have a full year on the big league level to be able to fully evaluate his true potential. While Maybin has yet to establish himself in the big leagues after coming over in the Miguel Cabrera-Dontrelle Willis trade in 2007, he has loads of talent. He's a .246/.313/.380 career hitter in 610 plate appearances, mostly with the Marlins. According to UZR his defense in center is very solid, rating him at +5.1 at the position for his career. Maybin, 23, hit .234/.302/.361 with 8 home runs and 28 RBIs in 82 games for the Marlins in 2010. According to Baseball America, Cameron Maybin has been one of the more highly touted prospects in all of Baseball.

Bill James, one of the most respected baseball writers and statisticians in the game projects Maybin to hit 277/.349/.424 with 14 HRs, 85 runs 60 RBI with 20 SB's in 2011.

The Padres acquired the 5-tool outfielder without having to give up their top 3 bullpen arms, Heath Bell, Mike Adams and Luke Gregerson. Ernesto Frieri will likely take over Webb's role. Another player who the Padres covet as an up and coming set-up/closer, that looked very impressive in 2010. The Padres dealt from their depth and in return landed a young controllable potential all-star with 5-tool talent. Both teams will benefit from this trade.

Scouting report:

Extremely gifted athlete. He is a true five tool player: speed, average, power, defense and a strong throwing arm. Has the ability to draw walks. If Maybin can cut down on the strikeouts and show more discipline he could become a future all-star center fielder for years to come.
