Both Jerry Crasnick of ESPN and Corey Brock of Padres.com have confirmed via Twitter that the Padres have agreed to a minor league contract with free agent Matt Stairs. Now into his early 40s, Stairs will receive an invite to Spring Training with the goal of being a left handed bat off the bench. In this role with the Phillies last season Stairs managed only a .194 batting average, but carried a .357 on-base percentage with five homeruns. Stair has made his fair amount of noise against the NL West, just ask Jonathan Broxton, and should provide good power off the bench. If he can impart any amount of his patience to the young Padres it would be a great bonus. Unlike the deal that brought Jerry Hairston Jr. to the Padres, this move was clearly meant more for offensive purposes. Stairs will serve only as an emergency outfielder as he has seen limited game action since 2007.
